Local doctor pioneers new surgery technique

After many years of experience and 18 months of successful surgeries, a local doctor has presented a new option that eliminates the use of surgical mesh to fix bladder and vaginal prolapse.
“The risk of mesh complications is gone,” said Dr. Mike Kozminski, urologist with Phoenix Urology, who led the study. “If we can give people the support and lift what they need in that part of their body without having the mesh, that’s a huge advantage. Most of the patients are being done at out-patients, so it’s a simpler surgery.”
Dr. Kozminski, who also serves as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, presented his study at the national meeting for the American College of Surgeons earlier this month. He has been performing the surgery for the last year and a half with about a 90 percent long-term success rate, he said.
The surgery uses the patient’s tissue, taken from the abdomen, to correct “dropped bladder” or prolapse of the bladder or vaginal vault. Commonly, surgical mesh is used to fix the issue. Mesh has been shown to perforate organs and erode tissue, according to thousands of complaints received by the FDA.
“We are using the patient’s own tissue,” Dr. Kozminski said. “There are no rejection issues related to it. By using the patient’s own tissue and augmenting it in a certain way, it gives it more support than what they have.”
He has performed about 25 of the procedures in St. Joseph, Dr. Kozminski said, and hopes to share the new procedure with more patients and doctors in the future.
“Awareness is the key thing,” he said. “... There are solutions to your problems. You don’t have to live with embarrassing situations with your bladder or pelvic discomfort or pelvic pressure.”
