With the advanced clean energy technologies invested, installed, maintained and operated by the company, HQIS's new energy system stands as a testament to the impact of SFCE's integrated solutions as it will cut the school's energy costs in half and reduce its carbon emissions by two-thirds.

    Under a 25 year energy management contract, SFCE has installed a fully integrated system comprised of its subsidiaries' technology, which includes a built-in photovoltaic (BIPV) rooftop system, a Nobao ground source heat pump (GSHP) heating, cooling and hot water system, high-efficiency LED lighting system by Lattice Power and a meteocontrol smart monitoring system. The project space covers a total of 15,000m2. Upon the completion, the system will enable the school to reduce energy costs by 50% and minimize its carbon footprint by more than 66%.

    In celebration of the launch of the system, SFCE held an unveiling at the school today.     The US is now the world’s fifth most attractive country for manufacturing solar components, and the only country outside Asia to make the top five, according to GTM Research.

    China remains the dominant workshop for the global PV manufacturing industry, home to four of the five largest module suppliers in 2014 – Trina, Yingli, Jinko and JA Solar. Canadian Solar, the other company in last year’s top five, is based in Ontario but does the bulk of its manufacturing in China.

    But with a raft of anti-dumping measures in place around the world targeted primarily at Chinese producers, and with the global market for PV modules quickly diversifying into new countries and regions, solar manufacturing is increasingly taking place outside of China.

    Many experts predict a significant tightening in the market for solar modules over the next year or two, which may further improve the economic case for manufacturing beyond China’s borders.  

    Trailing China on GTM’s “Global PV Manufacturing Attractiveness Index” are Singapore (where REC Solar is based); Taiwan (home to large cell makers like Neo Solar and Motech); Malaysia (which hosts factories owned by a range of global players, from SunPower to JA Solar); and finally the US.

    In compiling the list, GTM focused on countries’ business environment, access to PV demand, PV manufacturing support, and all-in manufacturing costs.

    Some 10% of the new production capacity announced in the past year will be built in the US, leading to optimism that more and more of the solar modules installed in the US each year will be manufactured domestically.

    At present, the largest PV factory in the Western Hemisphere is owned by Germany’s SolarWorld in Hillsboro, Oregon. But any day now the first modules will roll off the line at SolarCity’s factory in upstate New York, which is slated to reach 1GW of production capacity by 2017.

    First Solar, the largest US-based PV manufacturer, is expanding its capacity in Ohio.

    Last month Seraphim, a mid-sized Chinese PV manufacturer, said it would begin manufacturing panels in Mississippi, with a plan to hit 1GW of US capacity within three years.

    This summer Shunfeng International Clean Energy, the Hong Kong-based owner of Suntech, acquired US manufacturer Suniva and said it would help it expand its production capacity.

    Manufacturing costs are still relatively high in the US, GTM says, but US manufacturers benefit from strong local demand for modules and a good business environment.

    The US “ranks higher than any other high-cost country because of its robust domestic demand and access to markets globally”, says Mohit Anand, senior solar analyst at GTM Research.

    Rounding out GTM's top 10 list are: India, Thailand, Canada, South Korea and Germany.

  6. Apple to build 200MW of PV in China

    Tech giant Apple will build 200MW of solar in China and work with its supply chain partners in the country to develop a total of 2GW of clean energy capacity.

    The company made the announcement as its 40MW project in Sichuan province reached completion. It claims the solar farm now makes its Chinese retail and admin operations carbon neutral.

    “Climate change is one of the great challenges of our time, and the time for action is now,” said Tim Cook, CEO, Apple. “The transition to a new green economy requires innovation, ambition and purpose. We believe passionately in leaving the world better than we found it and hope that many other suppliers, partners and other companies join us in this important effort."

    Apple’s main manufacturing partner, Foxconn, will build 400MW of solar in Henan province by 2018 and has committed to generate as much clean energy as it uses in the manufacture of iPhones.

    “Our companies share a vision for driving sustainability and I hope that this renewable energy project will serve as a catalyst for continued efforts to promote a greener ecosystem in our industry and beyond,” said Terry Gou, founder and CEO, Foxconn Technology Group. “Sustainability is a core pillar in Foxconn’s strategy and we are committed to investing in green manufacturing,” he said.

    In February, Apple signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with First Solar for 130MW of solar capacity over a period of 25 years. The contract was valued at US$850 million.

The company announced today that it has supplied 1 GW of installations in Thailand, which it says is the fourth largest market in the APAC region.

    Thailand’s PV market has seen some disturbance due to political upheavals and financial uncertainty, however solar's competitive advantage in supplying the country with affordable and clean power solutions on a distributed basis has resulted in a significant solar market for over a decade. Indicative of this, Thailand has supported large scale PV rollout through a number of support programs for both large scale and rooftop solar arrays.

    The country’s National Energy Policy Council initiated up to 800 MW of projects under the Government Agencies and Agricultural Cooperative solar farm program in July 2013. The program will license projects up to 5 MW in size, which will receive a FIT of 5.66 Baht/kWh (US$0.16/kWh). Applications for the program close at the end of the year.

    “2015 has been a successful year for solar farm projects in Thailand and with the Government Agencies and Agricultural Cooperative solar farm program as well as emerging residential and commercial markets SMA expects to see further growth in this region,” said Country Manager Suntisuk Mathinapitak. SMA opened its Thai subsidiary in 2011.

    Marthinapitak added that SMA has built a reputation in Thailand based on leading and robust technology and local service.

    SMA upgraded its earnings outlook for 2015 last month, as it continues to cut costs, particularly in its operations in Germany.

However, solar power holds huge promise for residents of the developing world, not only a means of clean power, but as a means of electrification.

    To date, many of these efforts have been at a relatively small scale, and businesses from the developed world are challenged by working in an environment that is very different than that in their home nations.

    At least one company seems to be meeting these challenges and scaling its operations to access this vast, mostly untapped market of the more than one billion people globally who do not have reliable access to electricity.

    On Thursday, Off Grid Electric announced that it had raised US$25 million in a series C investment round, led by DBL Partners. Joining DBL are new and returning investors, including the private investment firm of Microsoft co-Founder Paul Allen and eBay Founder Pierre Omidyar's fund Omidyar Network.

    DBL Partners Founder and Managing Partner Nancy Pfund says that the company has a set of strengths that make it suited to this work.

    “When we looked at the company, we saw the leasing model coupled with a real commitment to driving down costs, and also suiting the payment model to the Tanzanian and the African customer,” Pfund told pv magazine.

    Pfund notes that the company's leasing model was inspired by U.S. third-party-solar company SolarCity, where DBL was an early investor. “It is a monthly payment, it is done on the cell phone, which is how a lot of goods and services are paid for in Africa,” explains Pfund. “It is very in keeping with what citizens in these countries are doing already.”

    The company's mid-sized system is based on a 25-watt PV module and a 60 watt-hour battery, which can charge appliances such as cell phones, power radios and light the typical Tanzanian home from sunset to sunrise. This last application can be particularly important, as it helps families avoid the health and safety hazards of kerosene lights.

    Pfund also says that deployment of solar is changing consumer behavior. “What they are seeing is that people start with that and figure out a way to pay for a bigger system,” says Pfund.

    Off Grid Electric is based in Tanzania and California, and has signed a partnership with the Tanzanian government to power one million homes in the next three years. The company recently entered its second national market, Rwanda.
