On June 14, 2016, I will travel to Washington, D.C. to attend the United State of Women Summit #USOW. Convened by the White House, the Summit will celebrate and address critical gender issues such as economic empowerment, health and wellness, educational opportunity, violence against women, leadership, and civic engagement. An important synergistic conversation about these issues will begin at the Summit and I am bringing my daughter Camryn along to lend her voice to it. In August 2016, Camryn will begin her senior year of high school. I have spent the last several months contemplating the important life lessons that I want to reinforce before Camryn embarks upon her next chapter. These life lessons mirror the topics to be discussed during the Summit and thus, I am looking forward to a true teachable experience. To maximize this opportunity I am providing Camryn with the following pre-Summit primer.

  1. First lady Michelle Obama teams up with Oprah to host ‘United State of Women’ summit at White House

    Jun 7, 2016 | The Washington Post

    By Katie Mettler

The video opens with the back of Meryl Streep’s head, then moves on to clips of Michelle Obama, Oprah, Tina Fey, Laverne Cox, Kerry Washington and most of the female cast of Shonda Rhimes’s hit political drama “Scandal.”

The women, 27 in all, riff on togetherness, pay equity, workplace leadership, and, as Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards introduces, the right of women to take charge of their own bodies. At one point in the video, which is set to a percussive soundtrack, the women explain it’s their choice when to say yes — and when to say no.

“Because duh,” comedian Jessica Williams says in the video. “Literally duh.”

This collection of famous, diverse women — actresses, writers, activists and CEOs — joined together in a promotional film posted online Monday to publicize the first ever “United State of Women” summit, a June 14 event held at the White House and hosted by First lady Michelle Obama and media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

The two will sit down at the summit for a conversation about how far women have come during their lifetimes, the First lady’s office wrote on Medium, and they’ll discuss the challenges they’ve faced in their own careers. Registration for the conference closed at the end of May, after 5,000 people signed up, but those interested can watch a live stream from home on the summit’s website.

The conference will focus on six topics: equal pay, women’s health care, education, violence against women, entrepreneurship and leadership and civic engagement.

A more detailed schedule will be released later this week, according to the Medium post, with a list of panelists, speakers and breakout sessions.

The summit is a collaboration of the White House Council on Women and Girls, the Department of Labor, the Aspen Institute and Civic Nation. Women from across the world applied to attend the conference, posting videos on social media making a case for why they deserved an invitation.

After the promotional video launched Monday, fans of the movement and women featured in the film posted support on social media and #StateOfWomen was a trending topic on Facebook.

The promotional video also included spots from Jen Welter, the first female NFL coach and first woman to play running back in men’s professional football; Aidy Bryant, an actress, comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member; Megan Smith, the United States’ first female Chief Technology Officer; Adepero Oduye, an actress known for her roles in Pariah and 12 Years a Slave; and Indra Nooyi, the chairman and CEO of PepsiCo.

The video and Medium post were both published on the same day that former first lady and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton made history by securing enough delegates, according to the Associated Press, to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination and become the first woman to win a major political party’s nod.

  2. Lawmaker to talk about paid family leave at women's summit

    Jun 12, 2016 | Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Rhode Island lawmaker will speak at the White House women's summit about her work on paid family leave.

The legislative press office says Democratic state Sen. Gayle Goldin is a panelist for Tuesday's "United State of Women Summit" in Washington, D.C.

Rhode Island began allowing workers to take up to four weeks of paid leave to care for a new baby or an ailing relative in 2014, becoming the third state with such a program.

Goldin, of Providence, sponsored the law. She continues to work to provide longer coverage and increase eligibility.

Goldin says she wants to spread the word about the state's success with paid family leave.

The White House convened the summit to discuss gender equality issues.

Democratic Rep. Teresa Tanzi, of South Kingstown, is also attending.

  4. This Is For My Daughter

    Jun 13, 2016 | Huffington Post

    By Stephanie Mitchell Hughes

Camryn one of the first lessons that I want to impart is the importance of identifying, listening to, and trusting your inner voice. Your powerful inner voice is your touchstone and guide. Listen carefully because it will alert you to danger ahead, tell you when to be still, and then beckon you forward. It serves to remind you of who you are capable of becoming. Once you find your voice use it to speak truth to power for yourself and those who have not found their own.

Second, my dear daughter you are coming of age at a time of unprecedented change. Do not fear the change, embrace it. This change is accompanied by an ever widening array of educational, personal, and professional choices. Know that you stand on the shoulders of women whose sacrifices made these choices possible. You thank them by choosing to change your corner of the world. Leave your corner of the world better than you found it. I will not pretend that your choices will be easy. But, if you listen to your inner voice your choices will put you on the path towards fulfilling your life purpose. Know yourself. Do not allow me or anyone else dictate your choice or path. Choose your own path and grow while you walk it.

Camryn, your health and wellness are sacrosanct. Do not sacrifice your health and well-being at the altar of perfection and expectations of others. Women work tirelessly both in and outside of the home. We willingly give ourselves away often at the expense of our personal and mental health. Selfishly practice self-care without apology. Exercise, sleep, practice stillness, and only consume that which holistically nourishes you. Zealously guard your mental and emotional health. Do not waste your energy striving for perfection. Recognize that who you are enough.

Fourth, understand that physical, sexual, and emotional violence against women threatens the safety of every woman. Even the strongest and most confident woman can fall victim to violence. There is no justification for or requirement that you endure it period. Violence is not about love; it is about power. You and your friends must watch out for each other. Never attend a party alone and do not leave a friend behind. Do not allow anyone to segregate you from your group. Never drink anything that has been left unattended. If you are physically, sexually, or emotionally violated, know that it is not your fault. Prepare to fight your way back from it.

Finally, remember life will teach you the lessons you need for your journey. Go live it. You will learn the most from your cruelest teachers. Learn the lesson the first time. Otherwise, it will just keep boomeranging back until you do the work. In this life you will not leap from one mountain top experience to the next. Life is about both peaks and valleys. Valuable life lessons are learned in the valley. You do not learn any lesson solely for your personal benefit. You learn the lesson to share it with others.

Camryn as you transition into young adulthood you must educate and equip yourself to join the conversation about the key issues affecting women. Your participation in the United State of Women #USOW is part of the equipping and educating process. My daughter, this is for you.

Follow the United State of Women online via live stream and on Twitter using #StateofWomen and #USOW

  5. 5 Awesome Feminist Documentaries That You Need to See Right Now

    Jun 13, 2016 | Huffington Post

    By Gabrielle Pelicci, Ph.D.

Can you feel the ground trembling under your feet? Can you hear the rumble of voices? The roar of applause? That’s the Global Female Empowerment movement, baby. On the stage. In the spotlight. Headed for the White House. Women are rising up like never before. And I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be more excited if it were raining chocolate-covered strawberries.

My first job, more than 25 years ago, was fashion modeling. I was a pawn in the big beauty industry conspiracy to make women feel inadequate and ugly. It only took me a year to realize that I needed to find a career that would lift women up, not bring them down. And I found that role as teacher and mentor to women in wellness.

But this isn’t about me. It’s about you. How much do you know about what women are doing to create a sense of solidarity and shared purpose? Are you gathering with your girlfriends to celebrate with us? Women’s liberation did not die in the 70s after women got equal pay rights and reproductive protection. Feminism has been simmering in the shadows for decades and has emerged as one of the most powerful movements of our time.

Here are 5 incredible films that you need to watch right now to get you fired up about female empowerment:

    1. Dream, Girl

Dream Girl is a documentary film showcasing the stories of inspiring and ambitious female entrepreneurs. The mission of the filmmakers is to make women’s most audacious dreams attainable. It was screened at the White House as part of the lead-up to the United State of Women Summit and premiered at the Paris Theatre in New York City on June 10, 2016 to a sold-out house. From brand new startups to million dollar industries, it’s time we stop telling girls they can be anything they want to be and show them what it means to be a leader.

    2. Girl Rising

Girl Rising is an innovative feature film about the power of education to change a girl - and the world. The mission of the filmmakers is to change the way the world values the girl and ensure that girls’ education is part of the mainstream conversation. Millions have seen the Girl Rising film. Its message is spreading across campuses and communities around the world. What girls want most is to be students - to learn. And now, by sharing their personal journeys, the brave girls of Girl Rising have become teachers.

    3. She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry resurrects the buried history of the brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. The mission of the film is to inspire women and men to work for feminism and human rights. The film has had theatrical runs in almost every state, and in many cities, sometimes running for weeks. Seeing is believing. To see She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry will help all women believe themselves and each other.

    4. Miss Representation

Miss Representation explores the way that the media sells us the idea that girls’ and women’s value lies in their youth, beauty, and sexuality and not in their capacity as leaders. 73% of people said that watching Miss Representation changed their opinion about the way in which women are represented in the media. Using film as a catalyst for cultural transformation, Miss Representation inspires us to challenge and overcome limiting stereotypes so that everyone, regardless of gender, race, class, age, or sexual orientation, can fulfill their human potential.

    5. !Women Art Revolution

Through intimate interviews, art, and rarely seen archival film and video footage,!Women Art Revolution reveals how the Feminist Art Movement fused free speech and politics to radically transform the art and culture of our times. The film highlights the history of those brave women who were told to give up their dreams, and instead started a revolution. With the rising female empowerment movement, a review of the rocky road traveled in pursuit of gender equity could not be timelier.

Luckily, the women in my family gave me the courage, confidence and audacity to believe that I could accomplish anything. And I’ve never doubted that. Even when I’ve fallen down face-first, over and over, I could hear my mom whispering in my ear, “You can be anything that you want!”

And now I am telling you: You can run every aspect of your life. You can be free and independent. There has never been a better time to be empowered, self-reliant, and rich in every way!

  6. Joined at hip: White House borrows Clinton's 'Stronger Together' slogan

    Jun 10, 2016 | The Washington Examiner

    By Paul Bedard

Not only has President Obama gone all in to help Hillary Rodham Clinton win the presidency, but now the first lady and his White House are echoing the Democrat's campaign themes.

This week, the White House unveiled its slogan for the upcoming "United State of Women Summit" in a release. "Together, We are Stronger" is the motto.

For some, it sounded familiar, and very close to Clinton's slogan.

Just last month, she revealed it on NBC's Meet the Press. Hers is"stronger together."

    She said it five times.

"Look, we are stronger together. We are stronger together in facing our internal challenges and our external ones. We are stronger together if we work to improve the economy," Clinton said.

  7. WASHINGTON, D.C. A sneak peek at the first-ever United State of Women summit

Jun 10, 2016 | Tampa Bay Business Journal

    By Frances McMorris

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Altrichia "A.Lekay" Cook, a rising swimwear designer from Tampa Bay, will get to visit the White House on Tuesday and hobnob with a number of high-powered women from all walks of life, including the First Lady, Oprah, and tennis great Billie Jean King.

Cook, CEO of Allusions by A.Lekay Swimwear, was invited to Washington, D.C. for the inaugural "United State of Women Summit," hosted by President Barack Obama, First LadyMichelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Senior White House Advisor Valerie Jarrett.

"You had to be nominated" to get invited to the event, Cook said. "I was totally blown away."

Also speaking will be gender pay champion Lily Ledbetter; Wall Street figure Sallie Krawcheck, who now chairs Ellevate Network; U.S. Representative and House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi, and Shonda Rhimes, creator of hit shows “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” Several notable male leaders will be speaking as well including Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and Walter Isaacson, president and CEO of The Aspen Institute.

Even though she won't be speaking on a panel, Cook anticipate to meet other women who she describes as those "who don't take no for an answer." In fact, she calls them "bad ass women" who are change agents in helping women break through barriers.

Cook, 29, showcases, sells and distributes globally to countries in Europe. Her luxury swimsuits have walked the runway at New York Fashion Week and graced the cover of magazines like Cosmopolitan. In fact, pop idol Nicki Minaj wore a Cook swimsuit on that cover.

Her line of luxury, high-waisted swimwear was created to mask abdominal imperfections from child bearing.

Yet, Cook's entrepreneurial success is just one aspect of what she wants to achieve. Cook also speaks at events ranging from empowerment luncheons to high school commencements.

“Through my efforts and activism in the community and through mentorship, I believe that I am fulfilling my life’s purpose as well as making strides to ensure that I am imprinting the lives of others (especially girls and women) and making powerful difference in our collective future,” she said.

The summit will focus on topics ranging from economic empowerment to violence against women to educational opportunities in the science, technology, engineering and math or STEM fields. Speakers at the two-day event also include feminist icon Gloria Steinem and actresses Patricia Arquette, Connie Britton, Mariska Hargitay, Debra Messing, Amy Poehler and Kerry Washington. 8. Local health advocate traveling to D.C. for women's summit

    Jun 11, 2016 | Cincinnati.com

    By Cameron Knight,

Part of Stacy Wright-Barleston's heart is dead.

    Literally dead.

Now, the two-time heart attack survivor has dedicated her heart's remaining beats to helping other women avoid her fate.

After her first heart attack in 2013, the 47-year-old started a nonprofit organization to help educate African-American women about the threats of heart disease, and recently took her message to the national stage by petitioning the White House in January.

She asked for more African-American women to be included in heart-health research.

"We carry the highest numbers (of heart disease), yet we are underrepresented in these areas or not even asked to participate," Wright-Barleston said.

As a result of the petition and her work to fight heart disease in Cincinnati, the Roselawn resident was asked to participate in the United State of Women Summit on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

The summit, convened by the White House, will bring together 5,000 influential female leaders to discuss the topics of health, economic empowerment, education, civic engagement, violence against women and entrepreneurship.

President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak at the summit. Among the 5,000 attending, Wright-Barleston will be joined by Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem and dozens of CEOs, activists and high-level government officials.

Wright-Barleston's journey to Washington, D.C., was not an easy one. The former credit analyst for a major pharmaceutical company found herself suffering from strange back pains at the age of 44.

After dealing with the symptoms for about two weeks with no relief, she gave in and called 911. She said the doctors told her she was in the midst a massive heart attack.

"They had to do emergency surgery," Wright-Barleston recalled. "I had a 98 percent blockage of my heart."

They placed two stents in her heart on two consecutive days. Between the surgeries, she said she had to remain perfectly still, flat on her back for 24 hours so as not to disturb the new stents.

Six months later, surgeons placed a dual defibrillator in her heart.

"Part of my heart had died, and when your heart dies, like anything else, it doesn't come back," Wright-Barleston said. "During my recovery, I just needed to know why. How did this happen to me?"

She began researching what had happened to her as a way to cope.

"I was scared to go to bed every night because I didn't know if that would be my last day," she said. "The healing process itself is overwhelming."

Wright-Barleston said she learned that a woman dies from heart-related diseases every 30 seconds in America, that African-American women had a great proportion of heart problems than any other demographic, and that the public's view of what a heart attack often ignores what the symptoms are like for women.

"That's why the call it the camouflage killer, because our symptoms can manifest in our chins, in our shoulders, in our arms, stomach aches, tiredness," Wright-Barleston said.

She founded Sisters of the Heart Network in 2013 to address these problems, and now works with over 40 volunteers who perform grassroots community outreach and work to provide better healthcare to women.

"We want women to be well mentally, spiritually and emotionally," Wright-Barleston said.

For the network's "Walk to Talk" program, volunteers go door-to-door in Cincinnati's neighborhoods distributing literature about heart disease and educating people about how they can talk to their doctors about obtaining proper care.

Wright-Barleston said 120 women attend the nonprofit's "Show Your Heart Some Love" event last year at New Prospect Baptist Church. During that event, volunteers enrolled 20 of those women into health insurance programs through the Affordable Care Act.

"Heart disease annually costs America $32 billion," she said. "That's my money, that's your money. It is an investment that we make sure people have preventive care."

Wright-Barleston argues the best way fight the disease is to focus on women.

"We want to heal women because when we heal women, we heal families. When we heal families, we heal communities," she said. "We all are connected."

Despite her success, Wright-Barleston knows that the work she is doing will likely not help her directly.

She is still diagnosed with heart failure. Since her first heart attack, she's been in the hospital 27 times. She suffered a second heart attack a year-and-a-half ago.

"It wasn't as bad as the first one, but a heart attack is a heart attack," she said.

Aside from her healthcare work, Wright-Barleston wants to inspire others to take action and engage with those in power.

"We have the power to make changes in America – people hear us, but we have to speak up," she said. "That's what I'm looking forward to, getting together with 4,999 more women like myself that have a voice, and that are trying to create a better America for tomorrow."

  10. Latina Blogger Pioneer, Author & Entrepreneur Ana Flores to Speak at the First-Ever United State of Women Summit

    | Latina Bloggers Connect

    By Press Release

LOS ANGELES, June 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- With a historic election on the horizon and recent headlines decrying leniency for violence against women, conversations surrounding gender equality have never been more critical. Latina blogger pioneer and CEO of Latina Bloggers Connect Ana Flores joins a powerful roster of experts, advocates, and grassroots and business leaders for the first ever United State of Women Summit taking place on June 14 at the White House. Developed by the Council on Women and Girls, together with the Department of State, the Department of Labor, the Aspen Institute and Civic Nation, the United State of Women will bring together advocates of gender equality to highlight the progress made, identify the challenges that remain, and chart the course for addressing them.

Ms. Flores, who has dedicated her career to empowering Hispanic America by providing outlets for growth in the digital space, will form part of a panel "Crosscutting-Revolutionizing Gender Norms," moderated by Jess Weiner, CEO of Talk to Jess and taking place from 10:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. ET. She and fellow panelists Julianna Chugg, EVP, Chief Brand Officer, Mattel; Amy Poehler and Meredith Walker, founders of Smart Girls; Dr. Stacy Smith, Associate Professor of Communication and Head of the Media, Diversity & Social Change Initiative at the University of Southern California; and Jamia Wilson, Executive Director, youth + tech + health (YTH) will discuss new research that brings to light disparities in media and product and brainstorm solutions for how businesses, organizations, and parents can help break down stereotypes that affect kids' aspirations.

"As a mother, this strikes a passionate chord in me. I have spent the last ten years creating content and opportunities for Latina storytellers, who have been historically underrepresented in the media," says Flores. "As parents, we can influence the next generation to help them learn and dream without limits and undo the long-lasting effects of machismo that still affects many Hispanic families."

In 2009, Flores launched SpanglishBaby, the award-winning community and resource for parents raising bilingual and bicultural kids, to fill a vacuum for culturally-relevant family content. In 2010, Ana graduated from blogger to CEO by launching Latina Bloggers Connect, Inc, a boutique digital influencer marketing agency focused on creating strategic content that connects brands and social causes with Latina bloggers and creators. Today, LBC is the first and largest network of digital Latina influencers in the U.S. and features an annual conference #WeAllGrow Summit, the intimate go-to professional and experiential conference for Latinas in the digital space.

"Through the opportunities we provide, bloggers and creators in our network have empowered themselves to break their own family's gender stereotype of la mujer en la casa (a woman's place is at home) and calladita te ves más bonita (you look prettier with your mouth shut) by creating their own online space and community where their voice has a purpose and they can be economically empowered," adds Flores. "I couldn't be more honored to lend my voice to this powerful Summit."

Cohosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, the United Summit of Women also features conversations with cultural icons and leaders on women's issues including Meryl Streep, Shonda Rhimes, Tina Fey, Laverne Cox, Tory Burch, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh,Dr. Jen Walter, Cecile Richards, Cecilia Muñoz, and Megan Smith, among others. In cooperation with the Ford Foundation, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women, the PepsiCo Foundation, and the Tory Burch Foundation, the United State of Women Summit will be available via livestream on June 14 at www.theunitedstateofwomen.org.
