The Filmmakers Behind ‘Making A Murderer’ Are Taking On Johnson & Johnson Next

What do you do after your groundbreaking Netflix series exposes a gross miscarriage of justice and the corruption in our country’s legal system, igniteshundreds of thousands of people to protest on social media, spawns dozens of conspiracy theories and becomes one of the most talked-about documentaries in the past decade? You take down one of the most powerful multi-billion dollar companies in the world.
Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, the filmmakers behind Making A Murderer, are planning to make Johnson & Johnson — yes, the baby powder Johnson & Johnson — the subjects of their newest project. The duo is adapting a Huffington Post article written by journalist Steven Brill titled “America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker.” In the piece, Brill reveals how the company made billions of dollars marketing a dangerous drug called Risperdal to children and the elderly. Apparently, the drug is a powerful anti psychotic used to treat people with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and it carries some pretty harmful side effects. Johnson & Johnson failed to disclose said side effects to the poor people it sold the drug to, which resulted in a lawsuit the company settled for $2 billion — though it sold $30 billion worth of the drug.
Ricciardi and Demos are partnering with George Clooney’s production company Smokehouse Pictures and Sonar Entertainment for the new project — no word yet if it’ll be a film or series, though Brill’s article is split into 15 parts. Nicki Paluga will adapt the piece with Ricciardi and Demos and the pair will direct as well.
This is pretty exciting news considering the filmmakers’ last project was such a hit for Netflix, but we’ll go ahead and say what everyone’s thinking: What does this mean for Making A Murderer season two?

Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, the directors behind arguably the most talked about documentary of all time, are taking on one of the biggest companies in the world for their next project.
The pair will director and co-write the adaptation of a Huffington Post article, "America's Most Admired Lawbreakers", an investigation into the Johnson & Johnson scandal which resulted in several billion dollar lawsuits.
Johnson & Johnson and some of it's subsidiary companies were found guilty of downplaying several severe side-effects to one of their drugs, Risperdral, which was sold primarily to children and the elderly.
However, Risperdral was sold by the company as a way to tackle problems such as dementia in seniors and attention deficit disorder in young children, when in fact the drug had been primarily manufactured to counter the effects of severe psychotic disorders.
This is not the only time that the company have faced legal issues with the products, as they recently settled a court case when their talcum powder was found to have caused cancer in users.
While the directing pair spent over a decade putting together Making A Murderer, which ultimately became an unparalleled success when it premiered on Netflix, there is no set timeframe for their follow-up, or how it might effect the already mooted season two of that documentary.
Ricciardi and Demos will be working with George Clooney’s production company Smokehouse Pictures and Sonar Entertainment on this new project, with no confirmation yet as to whether it may be another Netflix-style multi-part documentary, or one-off feature film.

The filmmakers behind Making A Murderer are taking on Big Pharma

Seven months after garnering critical acclaim for Making A Murderer—their 10-episode documentary series about the life of convicted murder suspect/prosecutorial punching bag Steven Avery—filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have lined up their next project. Moving from small-town crime drama to Big Pharma legal wrangling, Ricciardi and Demos are taking on pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson with an adaptation of Steven Brill’sHuffington Post article “America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker.”
Published last year, Brill’s article is an exhaustive, 15-chapter breakdown of the company’s legal and business practices, including claims that it knowingly subverted the law to market drugs to doctors serving protected populations like children and the elderly. The new series will dramatize Brill’s work as a scripted series, with Ricciardi and Demos directing, and production duties handled by Sonar Entertainment and George Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures. No network has been announced for the show yet, but given how well Making A Murdererreportedly did for Netflix, it wouldn’t be surprising if the streaming service tried to lure Ricciardi and Demos back for another dose of documentary magic.
