  1. How to babyproof your home

    Jul 10, 2016 | Toronto Star

    By VERITY STEVENSON

When you find out a baby’s coming into your home, everything looks different — that beautiful living room with its mahogany coffee table, floating staircase and low oak shelves is now an obstacle course of hazards for the 2-foot-tall creature who’s about to invade your space.

David Drutz wants to help you make that room, and all the others in your home, safe.

His store, Kiddie Proofers on Dufferin St. in North York, holds more than 800 products — from cabinet locks to stair gates — for 15 different childproofing areas.

Drutz says a growing demand for baby-proofing has come with the rise of households in which both parents work and as technology allows them to bring work home, making it a possible distraction.

“We live in a society of instant notifications,” Drutz said of the pressure to respond to every incoming message.

Baby-proofing was top of many parents’ minds last week as Ikea recalled more than 29 million of its Malm dressers — and similar styles to it — in the U.S. and Canada in the wake of six child deaths that were a result of the dressers toppling over.

We asked Drutz and fellow child safety expert Carolyn Sinclair, who owns Fifty-Seven, a family centre on Bloor St. W. offering courses relating to parenting and child safety, for tips on baby-proofing the home.

As general guidelines for any room, Drutz says tethering furniture that’s liable to tumble is a must. That includes, among others, dressers and flat screen TVs, which you can mount, tie down or attach to the wall with special straps.

  2. Warning: Ikea Recalls Furniture Blamed in Children’s Injury & Death

Jul 10, 2016 | The Interior Design Advocate

    By Donna Hoffman

An important guidepost here at TIDA is not simply the predictable adage “Buyer Beware.” Instead we favor empowering Design Lovers to be Wise Design Lovers, so our guidance on any design spending is always: “Buyer Be Aware.”

In this blog post, we hope to protect you, your family and your friends by spreading the word that about a widespread furniture product malfunction and recall. As reported in The New York Times, furniture giant Ikea, who cornered the market in low-cost-low-quality furniture, is recalling a slew of their products. 29 MILLION dressers to be exact. The Ikea dressers need to be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping when the drawers are open. Accidents involving the Ikea dressers have resulted in 70 reported cases of child injury, and in additional 7 tragic cases, children have been crushed to death. In many cases, toddlers opened the drawers in an effort to climb them like stairs. As recently as February of this year, a mother in Minnesota went into her child’s room to check him at nap time and found him crushed under the weight of a 6 drawer dresser from Ikea’s popular line, the Malm.

American furniture manufacturers who produce high quality and cost furniture, by in large adhere to voluntary safety standards which ensure that their products won’t tip over when drawers are extended and 50 pounds of weight are applied to it. The Ikea recall applies to all Ikea furniture that fail this test… 29 million dressers.

Last summer, Ikea did begin to offer free wall anchor kits to owners of its furniture, however many consumers never knew they needed this sort of precaution. The Times article reporting on the recall also noted that “a child dies on average” every two weeks in accidents involving furniture as well as large TV’s. In addition, each year, roughly 38,000 people make ER trips for injuries related to toppled furniture. Ikea is doing the right thing in trying to make right on this hazardous, and sometimes fatal design flaw.

However, our hearts go out to the parents and families who have gone through this heart breaking tragedy, like that poor mother in Minnesota. We hope you’ll help spread the word to family and friends who own or plan to purchase Ikea furniture. Correct assembly and wall anchoring is a must. Or perhaps, better to save a little longer and buy a studier, more well engineered product. Buyer Be Aware. Never is this wisdom more necessary or true, then in the me-too, look-alike world of furniture. Quality furniture costs more than you wish it, or think it should. Buyer, be aware. End Note: Please pass this post on to anyone who you know and love who owns or is thinking of purchasing Ikea furniture. The full article in the New York Times can be seen by visiting their website. 3. Huge Ikea furniture recall after six children killed

    Jul 10, 2016 | Bilbaoya

Since Ted McGee's death in February, consumer groups stepped up their calls for IKEA to stop selling the dressers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has met with IKEA, and the consumer watchdog says U.S. regulators have not identified a safety defect in the furniture.

Full refunds are available to customers with recalled chests and drawers manufactured between January 2002 and June 2016.

The furniture company announced Tuesday it is recalling products that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said could easily topple if not anchored to the wall.

The problem was seen in several styles of dressers, but the Malm chests and dressers were the most affected and had been linked to at least two of the deaths over the past two years. About 6.6 million are being recalled in Canada.

Eight million of the recalled items in the United States are Malm model chests and dressers, and 21 million additional children's and adult chests and dressers.

All of the children killed were aged three or younger.

Ikea says the furniture is meant to be secured to a wall and that it is safe when properly installed, according to the New York Times.

Housewife Janice Lee, 35, who has a 77.5cm-tall Malm dresser, said: "It's not a tall dresser and my maids use it to store their clothes, so I don't think anchoring it is required".

Schmidt's 2-year-old granddaughter, Angelina, was killed 8 years ago by a television that tumbled off its stand and fell on top of her. The stand was not an Ikea product.

"We spread awareness of the importance of securing furniture on our products and product instructions, on the website and in-stores". The firm is offering free kits to attach the units to a wall.

"IKEA needs to not just say put an anchor on the wall, but say it actually has an issue", said Klobuchar.

Ikea Singapore customers who need a replacement tip-over restraint kit can contact the retailer to order one for free.

  4. Six Children Dead From Falling Ikea Dressers

Warehouse spokeswoman Tanya Henderson said it sold parallel imported Ikea goods online from time to time, including Malm dressers.

If the pieces aren't anchored properly (or at all!) to the wall, they can topple over and severely injury young children.

IKEA is recalling 29 million of its dressers and chests the furniture giant says can tip-over if not anchored to a wall.

In 2015, Ikea started offering anchoring kits to customers who purchased the dressers.

IKEA said that the recall was based on a standard applicable in North America for free-standing clothing storage units and that the products meet all mandatory stability requirements in Europe and other parts of the world.

"We spread awareness of the importance of securing furniture on our products and product instructions, on the website and in-stores".

Of these injuries, half were experienced by children four years old and under, and the majority of accidents happened at home.

The minor girl on June 23 lodged a complaint in the local court of Godda district alleging that Munna had sexually exploited her. SCW chairperson Dr Mahua Maji said the Commission had taken cognizance of the complaint and had written to the DGP.

The Swedish firm, which has a firm in Southampton, said the units under the recall are children's chests and drawers taller than 23.5in and adult units taller than 29.5in.

In the past 13 years, six children have been crushed to death after an Ikea dresser tipped over.

Six types of MALM dressers manufactured between January 1 2002 and June 28 2016 are eligible for refund, including MALM 3-drawer dresser, MALM 4-drawer dresser, MALM 6-drawer dresser, MALM 6-drawer dresser (wide), MALM 6-drawer dresser (tall, narrow) and MALM 5-drawer dresser (tall, narrow) (all pictured in IKEA's recall here).

According to the spokesman, there was just one reported case of a dresser tipping over in Singapore, which occurred more than 10 years ago.

Ikea has been under pressure from consumer safety groups to conduct a full-blown recall.

Owners were urged to immediately discontinue use of the affected products if not anchored to walls, and to move them to rooms not accessible by children.

  5. Ikea's Dresser Recall: 7 Tips to Prevent Furniture Injuries

    Jul 10, 2016 | Tribu Magazine

    By Fidele Alvizo

Elliot Kaye (left) chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commissionand CPSC employees watch as a 13 kilo dummy falls over and under Ikea's Malm model chest of drawers.

News of the recall was first reported yesterday, with customers who bought the dressers after 2002 will receive a full refund or store credit.

The furniture company announced Tuesday it is recalling products that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said could easily topple if not anchored to the wall.

Most notable is Ikea's popular line of Malm dressers, which have tipped over and killed three toddlers in the US and injured over a dozen more, the CPSC says.

The Swedish firm, which has a firm in Southampton, said the units under the recall are children's chests and drawers taller than 23.5in and adult units taller than 29.5in.

Ikea US president Lars Petersson said the units were sold with instructions saying that they had to be mounted to walls.

"We were just lucky he wasn't trapped underneath", said Sumersille, adding that she was shaking this week after learning of the 29 million chests and dressers recalled by Ikea.

"When I read that six children had been killed, I was shaking".

Ikea has been under pressure from consumer safety groups to conduct a full-blown recall.

The furnishings can topple over if they are not anchored securely to walls, posing a threat to children, the commission said in a statement.

Following the deaths of several children from chests and dressers that have tipped over, IKEA is voluntarily recalling multiple versions of the furniture, the company says. One child was killed about 27 years ago. Customers can either install the kits themselves or contact Ikea to have it installed for free. The company is offering refunds as well as fix kits. The other deaths were more recent, between 2002 and 2016.

Owners were urged to immediately discontinue use of the affected products if not anchored to walls, and to move them to rooms not accessible by children.

  6. Ikea recall is a somber reminder for local safety advocates

"If you have, or think you have, one of these drawers... please act immediately", said Elliot Kaye, head of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

"Ikea chest of drawers are safe when attached to the wall as directed in the assembly instructions", the spokesperson told media.

Furniture giant Ikea is recalling millions of its chests and dressers, which have been blamed for the deaths of three children.

The recall by its USA and Canada counterparts was based on a local voluntary standard which applies to free-standing clothing storage units in North America.

In a statement, the commission, which made the film, revealed the furnishings can topple over if they are not anchored securely to walls, posing a threat to children.

He added Ikea Australia was offering customers who have misplaced the tip over restraints included with their chest of drawers additional free replacements which can be picked up in any store or online.

Ikea is issuing a massive recall prompted by concerns over child safety following the deaths of six children under the age of 4 and injuries to many more.

"It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers' homes, and we believe that taking further action is the right thing to do".

Ikea says the dressers can fall over if not fastened to the wall.

Six children aged three years old or younger were crushed to death by Ikea furniture and 36 others were injured, according to the CPSC.

Eight million of the recalled items in the United States are Malm model chests and dressers, and 21 million additional children's and adult chests and dressers.

In Canada, where no fatal incidents have occurred, the authorities recalled dozens of models sold since 1993.

Schmidt's 2-year-old granddaughter, Angelina, was killed 8 years ago by a television that tumbled off its stand and fell on top of her. The stand was not an Ikea product. Ikea isurging everyone to secure their stuff to the wall - they'll give you a kit and even come install it for free - but customers are also entitled to a full refund, or store credit if you bought the dresser before 2002.

  7. Ikea issues voluntary recall of 29 mn chests and dressers

    Jul 10, 2016 | Cinequo

Ted McGee was crushed to death when an Ikea chest of drawers fell on top of him in February.

"The furniture is inherently more unstable than it needs to be", said Elliot Kaye, the chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Full refunds are available to customers with recalled chests and drawers manufactured between January 2002 and June 2016.

Ikea, the low-priced furniture giant, is recalling 29 million of its popular Malm dressers after they caused the deaths of three children.

The defect affects 29 million units in U.S. and 6.6 million units in Canada.

At the company headquarters in Stockholm, Ikea group spokeswoman Kajsa Johansson told AFP that the drawers "meet all mandatory stability requirements on all markets where sold", adding that the bureaus were "safe when anchored to the wall" as instructed.

The US recall covers about 8 million MALM chests and dressers and 21 million other model chests and dressers.

"IKEA provides anti-tip restraints and instructions for wall anchoring with all chest of drawers", it said.

The New York Times says CSPS numbers show that in an average year 38,000 people visit emergency rooms because of tip-over accidents, with a majority of those people younger than five.

But falling-furniture hazards aren't limited to the current recall.

The announcement comes after six children were killed and at least 36 others injured by the units, which were prone to toppling forward when not secured to the wall.

The whole thing got us wondering: after putting together their Ikea furniture, how many people actually anchor it to the wall? One child was killed about 27 years ago.

Ikea said that anyone who owned one of those chests and dressers and had not attached them to a wall should move it out of reach from children.

According to the CPSC, Ikea was offering a refund or fix kits for affected styles, including the Malm – responsible for killing three toddlers, the CPSC said.

  8. IKEA RECALL MILLIONS OF CHESTS AFTER CHILD DEATHS

    | AlmonteAlDia.com

The furnishings can topple over if they are not anchored securely to walls, posing a threat to children, the commission said in a statement. About 6.6 million are being recalled in Canada. "I fully expect all furniture companies to do the same".

Charlie's House gives away tip-resistant furniture brackets much like the ones Ikea offers to customers free of charge.

The first death occurred in 1989 when a 20-month old girl from Mount Vernon, Virginia, died after four-drawer chest tipped over, fatally pinning her. The most recent was in February, when a 22-month-old from Apple Valley, Minnesota, was killed when a Malm six-drawer chest fell on him.

"It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers' homes, and we believe that taking further action is the right thing to do".

At a news conference, the Consumer Product Safety Commission underscored the risk with a live demonstration of chests tipping over.

IKEA is recalling 29 million chests and dressers in North America, following the deaths of at least three children who were crushed by the furniture when it tipped over.

The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit at the Mater Hospital also found toppling furniture to be a major hazard, with 1,032 cases recorded between 1999 and 2013 involving children under five years of age.

Ikea said it will give a full refund to owners of recalled chests and dressers made between 2002 and 2016.

Customers who can not secure the furniture to a wall are advised to bring the pieces back to any Ikea location for a refund.

IKEA said its chest of drawers are safe when attached to a wall as directed in the assembly instructions, and safety tips are also available in-store and on its website.

Schmidt's 2-year-old granddaughter, Angelina, was killed 8 years ago by a television that tumbled off its stand and fell on top of her. The stand was not an Ikea product.

Owners were urged to immediately discontinue use of the affected products if not anchored to walls, and to move them to rooms not accessible by children.

  9. Ikea chest of drawers recall: Australia stores still selling Malm furniture

Jul 10, 2016 | La Radio del Domingo

    By Oliverios Teran

A smaller percentage of deaths was caused when the child used force to topple the furniture, or when the child was playing near the product, the CPSC report says.

The Swedish furniture retailer has recalled nearly 36 million chests and dressers in the usa and Canada after they were linked to the deaths of six children, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

About 6.6 million are being recalled in Canada.

If the pieces aren't anchored properly (or at all!) to the wall, they can topple over and severely injury young children.

Mr Kaye said consumers "need to either get their anchor kit from Ikea for free and install it on their furniture, take it back to the store for a full refund or have Ikea come and pick it up from their homes for free".

Housewife Janice Lee, 35, who has a 77.5cm-tall Malm dresser, said: "It's not a tall dresser and my maids use it to store their clothes, so I don't think anchoring it is required". One child was killed about 27 years ago.

The recalled dressers are from its Malm line and other furniture lines.
