The NHS in Scotland is facing more than 400 damages claims from women who received controversial pelvic mesh implants, which have been blamed for agonising complications.

The implants were used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, conditions that commonly occur after childbirth.

Once implanted, the mesh can be difficult — sometimes impossible — to remove and some women have been left with severe and constant pain following the surgery.

Last year Shona Robison, the health secretary, told MSPs she was “happy to apologise” to patients harmed by the surgery after operations were suspended by her predecessor.
