Mars Retail Group said Thursday it is recalling about 52,400 units of M&M's-branded jewelry that may contain high levels of lead, according to an announcement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled jewelry, place the items out of the reach of children, and contact M&M’s World or visit an M&M’s World store to return the jewelry for a full refund,” the commission said.
Among the recalled items, which include some children’s jewelry, are earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces that were sold at M&M’s World Stores in New York, Orlando, Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada, from May 2015 to June 2016 and have the M&M’s logo “M” dangling as a charm or other feature.
The commission said there have been no injuries or incidents reported in connection with the recalled products, but it noted lead is toxic if ingested by children and can cause adverse health issues.
The CPSC also recalled on Thursday about 15,200 of Whirlpool Corp.’s microwaves because of a fire hazard, saying internal arcing while the microwave is in use can ignite a fire.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled microwaves, unplug the units and contact Whirlpool for a free replacement product,” the commission said.
The CPSC said Whirlpool has received five incident reports regarding the microwave ovens, including a report of a home fire, a report of smoke, a report of a burning odor and two reports of fires involving the surrounding cabinets.
That recall involves Whirlpool-brand microwave hood combinations that were sold in stainless steel, black and white at Best Buy, HH Gregg, Lowes, Sears and other home improvement or appliance stores across the country between January 2014 and April 2016.
Representatives of both companies did not immediately return requests for comment late on Thursday.
