Rough transcript: hillary clinton is taking an antibiotic with side effects so risky the FDA put out a warning less than two months ago. her doctor says the drug is treating clinton's pneumonia. consumer investigator jim strickland first exposed trouble with the drug two years ago and clinton's case is aising lots of questions. >> that is right. among the questions if secretary clinton's pneumonia is not that serious why is she taking this drug at all and did her doctor know about the FDA warnings. >> she was given levaquin and i think it's just crazy. >> Nicole Delane's testimony to an FDA panel helped sway the agency to issue new warnings. For a time the drug left her unable to walk. levaquin's active ingredient carries side effects so potentially severe. two pills are blamed for the death of chris stanley of duluth. >> using it for a non-life- threatening reason is dangerous. >> critics wonder whether clinton's lightheadedness and stumble on sunday were more about her prescription than her illness. >> many doctors say just use this super drug and we will go out there and treat. >> via skype i spoke with dr. bennett, a vocal proponent on tougher regulations of levaquin and other drugs of its type. as of july 26th the fda says they should limit their use in patients with less serious bacterial infections. clinton's doctor prescribed her pneumonia as mild. bennett wonders whether that doctor got the message. >> i have talked to physician friends throughout the country and many are not aware of the changes july 26th. >> the fda warnings do not list pneumonia mild or not among the conditions doctors should treat with other pills. bennett says out of caution for clinton's future health, her doctor ought to switch. >> there are plenty of altnerative antibiotics that are safer to use than levaquin for this kind of pneumonia. >> now i reported last month that the fda did not send out dear doctor letters to alert physicians of the new warnings. i also emailed the medical practice where secretary clinton's doctor works to find out why she was prescribed levaquin and whether the doctor knew about the fda warnings and i have not heard back. >>> more details now on the drug levaquin. the fda approved new labeling this summer. the label change reflects heightened warnings that the risk of debilitating side effects are too great to treat routine infections. a week later we learned, the FDA never directly notified doctors of those new labelings.

"welcome back to stronger together." but new concerns tonight after learning the democratic presidential nominee has been prescribed levaquin for her pneumonia. the drug is part of a group of powerful antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. and for more than year 8news has reported on patients who say these drugs have left them with permanent pain "within days of starting the levaquin i completely lost control of my bladder, i had blot clots." "within a month of taking levaquin i ruptured my first tendon it was my achilles tendon and in last 9 years i have ruptured ten tendons." and in may the fda responded issuing new label changes for the drugs stating the antibiotics have been associated with disabling and potentially irreversible adverse reactions including tendon ruptures and problems with the central nervous system. "your bmi is high." meanwhile donald trump surprises doctor oz today with his physical results. the doctor tells trump he could lose some weight, trump agrees. "i think if i had one thing i like to lose weight." doctor oz also said that trump is in good health for a man his age. meanwhile many patient advocacy groups speaking out about the drugs clinton has been given...the quinolone vigilance foundation-- says the adverse effects from these drugs do not discriminate and can affect anyone at any time. qvf issued this statement saying... "while recent labeling changes from the food and drug administration on fluoroquinolone antibiotics are a big step in the right direction, the news of secretary clinton being prescribed levaquin will hopefully start a national conversation highlighting the need for full over- prescribing of antibiotics leading to antibiotic resistance. Rough transcript: presidential candidate hillary clinton is taking the controversial antibiotic levaquin to combat pneumonia. clinton's team disclosed that information amid lingering questions about her health. call 6 investigates has been digging into the drug levaquin for the past year... and kara.. didn't the food and drug administration just announce big warnings for this medication? they sure did and according to this doctor's note released by clinton's camp, hillary clinton is on a 10 day supply of levaquin. at the end of july, the fda formally approved new warnings for levaquin and other powerful antibiotics known as fluroquinolones. those new warnings include a blacak box warning, the fda's most serious. that warning says that for many types of infections like sinus infections, bronchitis and urinary tract infections-- levaquin and similar antibiotics should be used as a last resort. an fda safety review found the drug can cause serious, and even permanent side effects to the tendons, muscles, joints, and the nervous system. we spoke with a doctor who has not treated clinton. he says he's surprised the presidential candidate would take levaquin given the current warnings. "the best thing to do would b to stop the drug i would suggest. if it's potential a serious reaction. there are many other antibiotics to use for pneumonia." purdue university student died in 2013 after taking levaquin. his mother said her son started having anxiety and heart palpitations after taking the antiobitic and eventually crashed his car into a cement embankment, killing him. the indiana mom pushed for change at a national level including increased warnings on the medication. now dr. charles bennett says clinton's doctors should check her for potential side effects including muscle weakness and pain. we reached out to her team several times today and we have not yet heard back.
