Talcum powder lawsuits alleging Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products can contribute to the development of ovarian cancer continue to move forward in Missouri Circuit Court in St. Louis. A pool of 50 jurors has already been selected for the litigation's third trial, and the Court is expected to choose the final 12 jurors today. Opening arguments could begin Tuesday, October 4th. (Case Number: 1422-CC09012-01; State of Missouri 22nd Circuit Court, City of St. Louis.)

The case scheduled for trial was filed on behalf of a California woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. According to her lawsuit, the plaintiff was a regular, long-time user of Johnson & Johnson's talc-based powders for feminine hygiene purposes in the years leading up to her diagnosis. She claims that the company was aware of the alleged link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer for years, but failed to take steps to warn consumers.

"Our Firm is investing a number of cases that put forth similar allegations regarding Johnson & Johnson talcum powders and ovarian cancer. A great deal is a at stake for both plaintiffs and defendants involved in this litigation, so we will be monitoring the progress of this trial very closely," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective medical devices, drugs and consumer products. The Firm is offering free legal reviews to women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer following years of regular, repeated use of talc-based products for feminine hygiene purposes.

    Talcum Powder Verdicts

This case is just one of around 1,800 talcum powder lawsuits that have been filed against Johnson & Johnson in courts around the nation. In February, another St. Louis jury awarded $72 million in compensatory and punitive damages to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer following three decades of genital talc use. That verdict was followed by another plaintiff's victory in May, at which time $55 million was awarded to a woman who was diagnosed with ovarian and endometrial cancer in 2011, after having used Johnson & Johnson's products for nearly 40 years.

On September 29th, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) heard Oral Arguments on a motion to centralize all federally-filed ovarian cancer claims involving Johnson & Johnson talc-based products in a single U.S. District Court for the purposes of coordinated pretrial proceedings. (In Re: Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Products Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2738)

Just over 220 additional talcum powder lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson in a multicounty litigation that is now underway in New Jersey's Atlantic County Superior Court. (In Re: Talc Based Powder Product Litigation – Case No. 300)

Women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer following the regular, repeated use of talc-based products for feminine hygiene purposes may be eligible to file their own talcum powder lawsuit. To learn more, please visit Bernstein Liebhard LLP's website, or call 800-511-5092 to arrange for a free, no obligation case review.
