  2. Sh*t Happened 10/20/16: Polk inmate forces cop on joyride, local nurses save man on flight

Need something to temporarily wash the taste of politics out of your psychic mouth? Fair season officially kicks off today, with the opening of the Hillsborough County Fair! When you get out of work, go get an elephant ear and win yer sweetie a giant stuffed raccoon, and we'll circle back around to the soul-sucking tediousness of reality when you're ready. But first:

A Polk County inmate on a work crew got his hands on a knife, kidnapped a cop, and absconded in a city vehicle before being re-arrested in St. Pete. Sing it with me: "Aaaand nobody shot hiiiiim/because he was whiiiiiite..."

This wonderful story broke yesterday about three Bay area nurses who saved a man's life on a flight from Los Angeles to Atlanta. There is indeed grace and goodness in the world, it's just not running for office this year.

And finally, Johnson & Johnson is bringing a "North America Global Services Center" and 500 jobs to Tampa. I'm sure there are plenty of "well-educated millennials" who can't wait to go to work for a company that lost a lawsuit over its talcum powder causing cancer, because if there's one thing I never see the kids doing, it's being passionate about corporate ethics and social justice.

  3. 3 reasons Johnson & Johnson picked Tampa for a global services center (Video)

Oct 19, 2016 | Tampa Bay Business Journal

    By Margie Manning

The Tampa workforce has three characteristics that drew Johnson & Johnson to the area.

Well-educated millennials, people further along their career path and multilingual workers were key in the health care company’s decision to locate its Global Services delivery center in Tampa, said Dominic Caruso, chief financial officer at Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ).

“Tampa has a great pipeline of entry level talent. It’s very important to us to attract that entry level talent. Last year, about one-quarter of Johnson & Johnson’s new hires last year were young professionals under the age of 35,” said Caruso, speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new facility. “Tampa also provides a great source of managerial level talent due to the presence of other shared service providers in the community.”

He also cited the diversity of talent, including multilingual speakers who are an important addition for the company’s global reach.

The services center brings together human resources, finance, procurement and information technology professionals, said Erin Champlin, vice president of Johnson & Johnson Global Services.

The workforce is key to Johnson & Johnson’s success, Champlin said.

“For all of the scientific breakthroughs and medical miracles, for all the devices that have reclaimed millions of people’s lives, for all of the iconic brands of this great company, in the end our real difference, our real secret ingredient, is and always has been our people,” Champlin said.

There are currently about 250 workers at the new global services center, an 88,500-square-foot facility at 8800 Grand Oak Circle in the Hidden River Corporate Park. The company expects more than 500 workers there by 2020, Caruso said.

Johnson & Johnson is in line for nearly $7 million in state and local incentives if it creates all the jobs it has promised to bring to the area. The new jobs are expected to pay an average wage of at least $75,000.

  4. Incentives make it back into the Florida governor’s budget

Oct 19, 2016 | Tampa Bay Business Journal

    By Margie Manning

Despite a stinging rebuke by the Florida Legislature of a business incentives package earlier this year, Gov. Rick Scott once again will try to persuade lawmakers to approve funding to attract companies to the state.

Scott said he will include $85 million for business incentives in his budget package for the upcoming legislative session.

Incentives work, Scott said, speaking at a ribbon cutting for Johnson & Johnson’sGlobal Services delivery center in Tampa.

“We’ve won over 500 competitive projects since I got elected. Companies like Johnson & Johnson, USAA, a variety of projects around the state,” said Scott.

It’s key to Scott that incentives provide a good return for taxpayers.

“So this year in my budget I’m going to put in $85 million for incentives, but I’m going to make sure taxpayers continue to get a return on their dollars,” he said.

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), a global health company, is in line for nearly $7 million in state and local incentives if it creates all of the high-paying jobs it has promised to bring to the new facility in the Hidden River Corporate Park.

The incentives were a factor in the company’s decision to locate in Tampa, but not the only factor, said Erin Champlin, vice president of Johnson & Johnson global services.

“We were looking for a place to do business that would be in an economically stable great place to work. The tax incentives certainly made that attractive,” Champlin said. “We also looked at availability of talent, location and proximity to the rest of our businesses.”

Johnson & Johnson has several other businesses in Florida — including its Human Performance Institute in Orlando and its Vision Care business in Jacksonville, where the Johnson & Johnson board of directors is scheduled to meet Oct. 20.

“The state’s been good to us so we wanted to leverage that infrastructure,” Champlin said.

Johnson & Johnson currently has about 250 workers at the new Tampa facility and expects to have more than 500 at the site by 2020.

  5. Leaders celebrate new Johnson & Johnson center — and 500 Tampa jobs

    Oct 19, 2016 | Tampa Bay Times

    By Jerome R. Stockfisch

Lauding the city as "a magnet for well-educated millennials," executives from Johnson & Johnson were joined Wednesday by Gov. Rick Scott and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn in formally opening the company's new North America Global Services Center, which will ultimately employ 500 people by 2020.

"J & J chose Tampa because of the quality of the people here — people with experience in business services. Smart, talented people. People with multilingual capabilities," Erin Champlin, the company's vice president of global services, told hundreds of employees and guests.

The state and the company announced last year that Johnson & Johnson would create jobs averaging at least $75,000 and make a capital investment of $23.5 million into the region. That made the New Brunswick, N.J., company eligible for state and local incentives of up to $6.4 million as it delivers on the promised jobs and wages.

There are already 240 employees at the center, in the Hidden River Corporate Park off E Fletcher Avenue and Interstate 75. J & J has leased the first five floors of six-story Hidden River Corporate Center One. Many of the jobs will be in human resources, accounting, information technology and other back-office jobs.

Dominic Caruso, Johnson & Johnson's executive vice president and chief financial officer, repeated the "millennial magnet" boast Buckhorn first used at the August 2015 announcement of the deal. But the city's cheerleader-in-chief had plenty more to tout.

"This is a place that three out of the last five years has led the state in number of new jobs being created," Buckhorn said. "This is a place that young people are flocking to. Where intellectual capital is coming, wanting to be a part of this. This is that place in America that the best and brightest want to be a part of."

Johnson & Johnson is one of the most recognized brand names in the world. Its consumer health care products include its eponymous baby shampoo and lotion, Band-Aid adhesive bandages, Listerine mouthwash and Tylenol pain reliever.

The move adds to an already significant footprint for the company in Florida. Its Vistakon eye care business is based in Jacksonville and its surgical, consumer and pharmacy businesses are in South Florida, which serves as a hub for Latin America.

"They're going to continue to grow because we're going to continue to make sure we have the right talent, the right taxes, the right regulation, and we're going to continue to make sure J & J wants to add more and more jobs," Scott said.
