Ivanka Trump hosts dinner with executives to discuss women in the workforce
Feb 3, 2017 | TheWeek
Ivanka Trump waded into politics Thursday evening for the first time since her father's inauguration, hosting a dinner party with business executives to discuss promoting women in the workforce, Politico reports.
"They want to hear from people who know the importance of keeping women in the workplace, and hear about what are the barriers," said Ernst & Young CEO Mark Weinberger, who attended the dinner. "They want to discuss what can be done through government, what can be done through business. They said, 'Would you sit down?' I said, absolutely."
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky, investment banker Adebayo Ogunlesi, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Trump's head of the National Economic Council, Gary Cohn, and former Goldman Sachs partner and adviser Dina Powell were also in attendance.
Ivanka Trump's nearness to her father makes her a valuable audience, and she has increasingly distanced herself from her former business roles, stepping down as an executive at the Trump Organization and moving away from her fashion line. Ivanka Trump has not impressed everyone, though: A former employee last year called her out for not offering maternity leave and Nordstrom recently made moves to discontinue carrying the first daughter's eponymous clothing line. President Donald Trump’s eldest daughter Ivanka Trump seems to taking formal tasks in Washington, D.C., by hosting a dinner party and accompanying her father to his official trips. Ivanka is starting to work toward the women’s economic empowerment agenda she promoted on Trump’s election campaign, Politico reported Thursday.
Ivanka has been active in the transition since her father won the presidential election. She also joined Trump on his call with Argentina’s president Mauricio Macri and sat in on his meeting with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Last month, Ivanka quit her executive position at the Trump Organization and separated from her fashion line to be with her father and her husband Jared Kushner, who is a White House senior adviser.
After her father won presidential election, it was reported that Ivanka would not take on a role in the White House and will concentrate on settling her family in Washington, D.C. Ivanka and Kushner were also reported to take their wide-ranging financial portfolios before moving to the country’s capital from New York and face inevitable questions about a potential conflict of interest.
Ivanka hosted a dinner party with a group of CEOs at her new house in Washington, D.C.’s Kalorama area, with an aim to seek ideas on ways to promote women in the workforce and paid maternity leave , according to Politico. The report noted that, Thursday’s dinner party marked Ivanka’s attempt in politics, since moving to Washington, D.C.
The part was reportedly attended by Walmart CEO Doug McMillon; General Motors CEO Mary Barra; Ernst & Young CEO Mark Weinberger; Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky; investment banker Adebayo Ogunlesi; JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon; Trump’s head of the National Economic Council, Gary Cohn; and Dina Powell, the former Goldman Sachs partner, who now serves as the president’s senior counselor for economic initiatives.

Ivanka Trump has been carrying out ceremonial responsibilities in the White House without having an official role in her father Donald Trump's administration, giving rise to speculation that Trump's eldest daughter may take up responsibilities of first lady as Melania Trump continues to live in New York.
Earlier this year, Ivanka made her move to Washington D.C. officially, when she purchased a mansion with her husband, Jared Kushner. While Ivanka expressed that she has no plans to take on a formal job in her father’s administration, she has reportedly been involved in a lot of roles related to the White House.
On Thursday night, Ivanka hosted a dinner party with a group of CEOs at her new Kalorama home, according to Politico. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon; General Motors CEO Mary Barra; Ernst & Young CEO Mark Weinberger; Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky; investment banker Adebayo Ogunlesi; JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon; Trump’s head of the National Economic Council, Gary Cohn; and Dina Powell, the former Goldman Sachs partner who recently joined the administration to advise Ivanka and Kushner, were all present at the party.
Ivanka also accompanied the President to Dover Air Force Base to honor the remains of the U.S. Navy SEAL who was killed during a raid on al Qaeda militants in Yemen. The father and the daughter reportedly spent some time with the family of Chief Special Warfare Operator William "Ryan" Owens, who was the first known military casualty of the Trump presidency. Later that day, she appeared to represent the White House when she celebrated the lunar New Year at the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
As Ivanka carries out the roles that most likely should have been performed by Melania, rumors circulate that the 35-year-old may be part of similar work. However, during a recent 20/20 interview with Deborah Roberts, Ivanka said: “There’s one first lady, and Melania will be an unbelievable first lady. I’m incredibly proud of her. She’s intelligent, warm, caring. She’s a remarkable person.”
"Today my focus is really just moving to Washington traveling around the country and listening and getting great feedback on how I can add positive value," she said. When asked whether or not she would have an office in the White House, Ivanka said that she was still figuring out her role.
"I'm going to be a daughter," she said. "Wage equality, childcare. These are things that are very important for me. I'm very passionate about education. Really promoting more opportunities for women. So you know, there're a lot of things that I feel deeply, strongly about. But not in a formal administrative capacity."
There were also reports that the Ivanka and Kushner's reason for the move to Washington D.C. could also be that the latter, who was a close adviser during his father-in-law’s campaign, could be taking a position in the Trump White House.

Ivanka Trump Hosted a Dinner Party for CEOs About Women in the Workforce

Ivanka Trump may not be formally serving in President Donald Trump’s administration, but on Thursday night she took her first steps towards influencing policy since her father’s inauguration. The eldest Trump daughter hosted a dinner party at her home for high-profile CEOs and business leaders to talk about women in the workforce and paid family leave, Politico reports.
Among the guests at her Kalorama home on Thursday were Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and Ernst & Young CEO Mark Weinberger, the two men President Donald Trump picked to advise him on the topic of women in the workforce. The guest list also included JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, and the former Goldman Sachs partner who recently became an advisor to Ivanka and her husband Jared, Dina Powell.
In January Ivanka stepped down from the Trump Organization and her apparel and accessories brand to focus on settling her family into their new home in D.C., in addition to working on “leveling the playing field” for women in the business world. Since then she’s hosted a few low-key events, including a similar dinner for powerful businesswomen at Wendi Murdoch’s apartment before the inauguration to discuss the realities facing women in business. Politico notes that although this is now the second instance of Ivanka “leveraging a unique network and powerful perch to support her father’s administration,” she has still remained silent on his more controversial orders, such as his immigration ban.
