SNP ministers have been accused of trying to avoid parliamentary scrutiny by making a rash of statements on controversial issues just as MSPs take a two-week break from Holyrood.
The Scottish LibDems claimed the government was trying to stifle debate by making four ministerial controversies on March 30, the final business day before the Easter recess.
The statements will be on fracking, an overdue mental health strategy, plans to merge Scotland’s enterprise and skills agencies, and health problems associated with vaginal mesh implants.
LibDem MSP Mike Rumbles, who insisted the government set aside two days to debate referendum powers this week, said: “This is an unprecedented move by the Scottish Government who are squeezing in four major ministerial statements in one afternoon.
“This will mean that MSPs will have to wait 18 days until they are able to press SNP ministers further, which is unacceptable.
“All of these statements are incredibly important and people will be suspicious that bundling them together will result in a tsunami of bad news.
“This latest move speaks of a Government that is running scared of proper scrutiny. This timetabling disrespects and undermines the role of Parliament and should not be allowed.”
A spokesman for the First Minister said Mr Rumbles had a cheek.
“It was Mike Rumbles who specifically asked for a two-day debate on an independence referendum, so he can hardly complain about that now – and quite how bringing issues to parliament equates to avoid parliamentary scrutiny, only he can explain.”

A woman who had surgery to improve her sex life has told how the operation left her vagina with 'teeth' that 'bit' her partner.
Theresa Bartram, 50, from Brighton, suffered from stress incontinence after giving birth and struggled with confidence in the bedroom.
The mother-of-one had gone without sex for seven years by the time she was referred for an operation to lift her prolapsed bladder using a plastic mesh sling called a transvaginal tape (TVT) to stop her leaking.
It worked and sex was better than ever, Theresa said – until two years later when she almost 'sliced off' the end of her partner's manhood.
Little did she know, the mesh was slowly eroding through the side of her vaginal wall, causing Theresa to grow an abscess which had become infected and turned septic - putting her at risk.
'It was like it had grown teeth,' she recalled. 'His [penis] was bright red and spouting blood. There was a big red stain spreading between us on the sheets.
'After that he was scared of my lady garden and approached it as if it was a Venus flytrap and he was a bluebottle.'

Theresa was sure her partner's injury had been caused by the mesh she could feel inside her, but every time she saw her doctor she was assured it was working just fine.
The pair avoided sex as they were too scared to try again – and six months later they ended up going their separate ways.
Fearful of getting intimate with anyone new, as she didn't want to risk injuring them, Theresa's confidence yet again hit rock bottom.
She went on a diet and started exercising, and dropped from a size 20 to a size 14, however she noticed a decline in her general health and visited her GP, who diagnosed her with IBS and later prescribed antidepressants.
Over the next few years Theresa had her gallbladder removed and saw 25 different doctors, but remained concerned her problems stemmed from her TVT.
By now she had read about the growing concern surrounding complications which had caused the operation to be banned in Scotland.
However it was not until 2015, when her vagina began leaking green puss and emitting a foul smell, that she was properly examined.
A consultant told her the mesh needed to be removed urgently. It had eroded through the belly button side of her vaginal wall, causing her to grow an abscess which had become infected and turned septic.
In November 2015, it was finally removed in a complicated operation. The mesh had secured itself with cartilage to her pelvis, first shrinking then turning hard.
'It felt like razor-sharp teeth, hence why it had ripped a chunk from my boyfriend's [penis],' Theresa explained.
She was eventually told that the mesh had been fitted too low, which is why she had injured her partner's penis and suffered complications.
The removal left her completely incontinent and her vagina is now numb. meaning that, at just 50 years old, she fears she will remain celibate forever.
She said: 'I was told this simple procedure would cure my incontinence and give me more confidence on the bedroom, but it has ruined my life.
'What is a transvaginal tape (TVT) procedure?
. People with stress incontinence leak small amounts of urine, sometimes when coughing, laughing, sneezing or doing exercise.
. For women, tape procedures may be recommended to stop the problem by providing support to a sagging urethra.
. In TVT surgery, a mesh tape is placed under your urethra like a sling or hammock to keep it in its normal position.

. Around 13,500 women have the operation annually on the NHS and it's the most common way to treat stress incontinence.

According to a British lady named Theresa Bartram, that’s exactly what she was given by doctors who botched a surgery that was supposed to have corrected her problem of incontinence. The surgery resulted in a “biting” or self-described “Venus flytrap” vagina that injured the penis of a man she was having sex with post surgery.
According to Daily Mail, a device known as TVT, short for transvaginal tape, was put in place inside her vagina during the operation. TVT is designed to relieve incontinence, among other things, but in Theresa’s case the surgeon(s) had reportedly placed it too close to the vaginal opening, which Bartram says caused her to involuntarily “bite” her partner’s penis.
ronically, the vaginal surgery was supposed to have improved the 50-year-old’s sex life. Theresa had reportedly developed the problem of incontinence after having children and it had negatively impacted sexual relations for her.
The application was successful for two years after insertion and Bartram reportedly said her sex life had benefited greatly, until the bizarre incident that severely wounded her sex partner mid-intercourse.
The TVT was eventually taken out, and now Theresa Bartram has taken to the streets to protest the surgery. She doesn’t want doctors to be allowed to perform it anymore.
The “biting vagina” occurrence isn’t the only reason Theresa wishes for the procedure to be outlawed, as during the years she had the transvaginal tape inside her, the device was gradually wearing on the tissue of her vaginal wall. She grew sicker and sicker and no one, least of all Bartram, knew the reason why.
Meanwhile, she and the man her vagina had wounded called it quits as she was too afraid to engage in sexual intercourse, and even after he had gone, her fear of hurting another kept her abstinent.
Twenty-five doctors, one gall bladder removal, and a sexual dry spell later, one day Theresa noticed that her vagina had started to discharge a noxious green substance, which turned out to be pus. When she went to get it checked out, she found out that the TVT with “teeth” that could bite had been causing massive damage inside her body — enough so that emergency surgery was warranted.
“A consultant told her the mesh needed to be removed urgently. It had eroded through the belly button side of her vaginal wall, causing her to grow an abscess which had become infected and turned septic.”
Upon removal it was discovered that the device that was supposed to have solved her post-baby incontinence problem had melded itself, with the aid of cartilage, to become part of her pelvis.
The surgical use of this type of transvaginal mesh has not come without its share of controversy. Law offices promising compensation for complications resulting from the device can be found throughout the internet and American television.
According to Mayo Clinic, there are generally two reasons a woman may be a candidate for TVT: incontinence, like in Theresa Bartram’s case, and a condition known as pelvic organ prolapse (POP), which is when the organs the pelvis is supposed to secure drop out of position.
Using a TVT to fix either of these problems can (and do) result in complicated and debilitating conditions, though most of the time women with pelvic organ prolapse are worse off with the mesh than those afflicted with urinary incontinence.
In America, the Food and Drug Administration classified the application of a transvaginal mesh as moderately risky in 2008, but eight years later in 2016 they moved the classification to high risk.
Theresa Bartram survived her ordeal, but not without severe consequences. She is unable to hold in her urine at all now, partly because she has lost feeling in that part of her body. She worries about never being able to enjoy sex again. Her life has been irrevocably altered, and she blames the mesh for “ruining her life.”

She begin dieting and exercising, only to discover that her health was getting worse. She experienced stomach bloating, severe aching, diarrhea and vomiting. She found herself at the doctor’s office, again, unsure of what was wrong with her. They first diagnosed her with irritable bowel syndrome and depression. They gave her antidepressants and removed her gallbladder. She continued to see dozens of doctors about her health problems and, despite their reassurances, remained concerned that the mesh was the source of her problems.
Then, in 2015, Bartram’s vagina began leaking green puss and emitting a foul smell, which ultimately lead to her getting the mesh removed. When the mesh that was supposed to save her life in the bedroom was removed, she was left, once again, incontinent. As for her vagina, it remains numb, and she will, unfortunately, have to stay celibate forever. She said about the incident, It made my vagina deadly and forced me into a life of celibacy. It could have killed me. I’m pleased the mesh is gone but it has left my body and my vagina a total mess. I wear padding all the time and sleep on incontinence sheets. Since her horribly traumatic experience, Bartram has become active in a group called Sling the Mesh, which aims to fight against the controversial surgery.

According to The Mirror, Teresa Bartram got surgery on her vagina to combat incontinence and to improve her sex life. The surgery consisted of a plastic mesh sling, called a 'transvaginal tape', being inserted into her vagina. It's placed under the urethra to keep it in a normal position.
Two years later, after what she thought was a successful surgery, it suddenly stopped working and developed sharp 'teeth'. Teresa says that the mesh from the tape was the cause of the injury.
She said:

Theresa Bartram, of Birmingham, says her "lady garden" became a "Venus fly trap" which left her then-partner feeling as if he was the fly after he was almost disfigured during sex.
"It was like it had grown teeth," Ms Bartram, 50, told The Sun. "His willy was bright red and spouting blood. There was a big red stain spreading between us on the sheets."
Crushingly, Ms Bartram had only just gotten her sex life back after seven years of abstinence due to an incontinence problem, which prompted her to use the NHS to get a mesh sling made of transvaginal tape.
The procedure to lift her bowel seemed to have worked and Ms Bartram's sex life was restored, until the above incident in 2009 – but things got even worse from there.
After six months without intimacy Ms Bartram and her boyfriend broke up. But doctors refused to entertain her suspicion that it was the mesh tape that had damaged her boyfriend's penis.
It wasn't until 2015 when her vagina began to leak a "foul smelling green pus", prompting an urgent operation, that Ms Bartram was finally vindicated.
As she had suspected, the mesh had shrunk, hardened, and slid against her vaginal wall, creating the "Venus fly trap" effect.
"It felt like razor-sharp teeth, hence why it had ripped a chunk from my boyfriend’s willy," Ms Bartram said.
Now again consigned to celibacy after the removal, which has left her incontinent and her vagina benumbed, Ms Bartram has joined a chorus of women calling for TVT to be banned, adding her voice to the "Sling the Mesh" campaign.
