Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company has named as its new chief executive officer John Lawn, who has served as company president since October.
Lawn, who will assume the post immediately, succeeds Bill Simpson, who is retiring at the end of the year and will remain with the company as CEO emeritus until then.
Eric Henry, CEO and chief investmentment officers of Hershey Trust and the chairmen of the HE&R board, praised the decision, saying Lawn has been instrumental in the growth of the company over the past 13 years.
The announcement, the company said in a news release, is the culmination of a succession plan established when Simpson announced his intent to retire last June.
Lawn joined the company in 2004 as director of food and beverage for Hersheypark Entertainment Complex. He served as assistant general manager of Hersheypark Entertainment Complex from May 2005 to February 2010, and then was promoted to associate vice president of operations. Later that year he was named vice president of operations and in June 2015 became chief operating officer.
Prior to joining HE&R, Lawn worked with clients at Yankee Stadium, FedEx Field, and the Men's US Open Championships, among other sporting venues and hospitality events.
HE&R and its subsidiaries own or operate the Hersheypark Entertainment Complex, Hersheypark Arena & Stadium, ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park, Hershey Bears AHL Hockey Club, Giant Center, The Hotel Hershey, Hershey Lodge, Hersheypark Camping Resort, The Spa At The Hotel Hershey, Hershey Country Club and Hershey Golf Collection, Hershey Nursery, and Hershey Laundry & Dry Cleaning.

HERSHEY - The Board of Directors at Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company named John Lawn as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
Lawn succeeds Bill Simpson, who is retiring at the end of the year and will hold the title of CEO Emeritus until his retirement.
"Our entire board is pleased to name as CEO someone with John’s qualifications, experience and most importantly, dedication to HE&R and its mission to support the Milton Hershey School," said Eric Henry, CEO/Chief Investment Officer of Hershey Trust Company and HE&R Board Chair. "Throughout his 13 years with the company, John has been instrumental in its growth and enhanced focus on customer service and the guest experience. The company is well-positioned to continue its growth in the coming years. John is the ideal person to lead this important phase of HE&R’s progression.”

The president of the parent company of popular Hersheypark has added chief executive to his title.
John Lawn in October 2016 became president of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts as part of the succession plan laid out when outgoing CEO Bill Simpson announced his retirement in June 2016.
Lawn will now play dual roles as president and CEO, effective immediately, according to the company. Simpson will retire at the end of the year and will be CEO emeritus until his retirement.
"Throughout his 13 years with the company, John has been instrumental in its growth and enhanced focus on customer service and the guest experience," Eric Henry, CEO and chief investment officer of Hershey Trust Company, said in a statement. "The company is well positioned to continue its growth in the coming years. John is the ideal person to lead this important phase of [Hershey’s] progression.”
Lawn was previously chief operating officer, a title he earned in June 2015. Lawn joined Hershey Entertainment & Resorts in 2004 as director of food and beverage at Hersheypark Entertainment Complex.
"With the prospect of significant growth on the horizon, I am eager to take our world-class theme park, resort properties and entertainment venues to the next level," Lawn said in a statement.
Milton S. Hershey founded the company in 1927 and it, along with its subsidiaries, owns and operates ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park, Hershey Lodge, Hersheypark Camp Resort, among others.

Hershey Entertainment targets The Milton Hotel in trademark infringement fight

The owners of a recently opened hotel in Hershey are the targets of a federal trademark infringement lawsuit just launched by Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Co.
Hershey Entertainment, which is known for vigorously defending its trademarks, claims The Milton Hotel at Route 422 and Sipe Avenue has crossed a legal line by using the first name of Milton S. Hershey, the chocolate magnate and philanthropist who put Hershey on the map.
The firm also contends in the U.S. Middle District Court complaint that Milestone Hotel Partners LLC, which it believes is the owner of the Milton Hotel, is illegally using Hershey Entertainment's trademarks including the Hershey name, in its promotional materials.
Hershey Entertainment is asking Chief Judge Christopher C. Conner to order Milestone to change the Milton's name, purge any Hershey trademarks from its advertising, sign over the domain name for its website and pay unspecified triple damages on any profits it amassed by the alleged infringement.
Attempts to contact Milestone officials for comment on the case were unsuccessful Wednesday morning.
One question here is whether Conner will ever have to rule on the dispute, since those targeted by Hershey Entertainment in trademark disputes tend to fold before the court has to intervene.
In its latest suit, Hershey Entertainment cites the array of Milton S. Hershey-related trademarks it has held in some cases for more than a century. Those include "Hershey," "The Hotel Hershey," "Hersheypark," "The Sweetest Place on Earth" and "Milton Hershey."
"The Hershey marks and Milton S. Hershey's name have tremendous drawing power, goodwill and value that (Hershey Entertainment) must protect," the suit states.
Milestone is illegally trying to capitalize on those marks by pirating them for The Milton Hotel, which is a former Best Western, Hershey Entertainment claims. It contends that "Hershey" is used in The Milton's signage on its website, www.miltonhotelhershey.com., and on on-line travel sites.
Hershey Entertainment claims it sent a cease and desist letter to The Milton Hotel owners in September. It says negotiations seemed at first to herald a compromise, but the talks broke down this spring, prompting the filing of the suit.
