Rough Transcript:
The state of Missouri is trying to fight the growing opioid epidemic by suing the pharmaceutical companies that make widely abused pain killers. That suit, filed today, names three companies which attorney general Josh Hawley says make up the lion's share of the opioid market. "We are seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages and hundreds of millions more in civil penalties. We are seeking in short one of the largest judgments in Missouri history. and this is why. These companies have helped create an epidemic of drug abuse never before seen in Missouri history." Now, Missouri is the only state in the nation without a prescription drug monitoring program. One of the companies, Purdue Pharma, responded to a statement by saying it vigorously denies the allegations of the suit. Janssen pharmaceuticals says it has acted appropriately.
