Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly added roughly 400,000 viewers last night, rebounding to its best showing since June 18. With a total 3.5 million viewers, it was also closest to 60 Minutes (a repeat) in over a month.
In the demos, Kelly brought a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and a 0.7 rating among adults 25-54.
That was NBC's only original telecast for the evening, a night won by CBS with a new episode of Big Brother and a slightly improved Candy Crush. Big Brother earned a steady 1.8 rating among adults 18-49, leading into a new Candy Crush (0.6 adults).
ABC put out new episodes of Steve Harvey's Funderdome (0.8 adults) and $100,000 Pyramid (0.7 adults). On Fox, American Grit came in with a 0.4 rating in the key demo.

Telling viewers last night that she is “so grateful to you for watching,” Megyn Kelly ended the summer stint of her newsmagazine series and NBC debut with a plug for her September 25-premiering morning show and more.
And, as NBC’s only original of the night, the last Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly(0.5/2) of 2017 was up among adults 18-49 and in total viewers. In its closest gap yet with CBS’ 60 Minutes (0.6/3), Kelly’s show was up 25% in the key demo over its previous regularly scheduled show of July 16 and rose 12% in viewers to 3.52 million. According to Kelly’s signoff last night, Sunday Night will be back for another run in the spring.
With that, the night belonged to the House of Moonves once again as CBS’ Big Brother (1.8/8) stayed even with its July 23 show but again was the highest rated and — with 6.37 million tuning in — most watched show of Sunday. At 9 PM, newbieCandy Crush (0.6/2) was up a tenth to help the net deliver a 0.9/4 rating and 4.57 million viewers.
Fox’s only original of Sunday’s primetime was an even American Grit (0.4/2) at 9 PM. ABC had new episodes of Steve Harvey’s Funderdome (0.8/3) and The $100,000 Pyramid (0.7/3). The former was the same as its July 23 show, and the latter was down a tenth.

“Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly” just had its most-watched episode since June 18 — but that doesn’t mean NBC was much of a factor last night. After all, we’re only talking about an average of 3.511 million total viewers.
CBS finished first throughout primetime thanks to “Big Brother”; ABC was runner-up with “Steve Harvey’s Funderdome.” NBC settled for third overall, ending up just one-tenth of a Nielsen point ahead of Fox in the key 18-49 demographic.
Kelly’s main interview guest last night was Ricky Gervais.
CBS was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/4 share in the advertiser-coveted demographic and in total viewers with an average of 4.6 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 7 p.m., “60 Minutes” had a 0.6/3 and 6 million viewers. “Big Brother” at 8 earned a 1.8/8 and 6.4 million viewers. “Candy Crush” at 9 received a 0.6/2 and 2.6 million viewers. A rerun followed.
ABC was second in ratings with a 0.7/3 and in viewers with 4.3 million. After repeats, “Funderdome” at 9 put up a 0.8/3 and 3.9 million viewers. At 10, “The $100,000 Pyramid” at 10 got a 0.7/3 and 4 million viewers.
NBC was third in ratings with a 0.5/2 and in viewers with 2.6 million. “Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly” at 7 managed a 0.5/2 in the demo. Repeats finished the night.
Fox was fourth in ratings with a 0.4/2 and in viewers with 1.2 million. Between reruns, “American Grit” got a 0.4/2 and 1.2 million viewers.
Univision and Telemundo tied for fifth in ratings, both with a 0.3/1. Univision was fifth in total viewers with 969,000; Telemundo was sixth with 882,000.

An encore telecast of “60 Minutes” (4.6 rating/9 share at 7 p.m.) on CBS topped this final Sunday in the household overnights, besting competing “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly” (#3: 2.5/ 5) by a hefty 44 percent. Logically, NBC would have been better off positioning Kelly’s newsmagazine elsewhere.Perennial Eye net summer favorite “Big Brother” scored a dominant 4.1/ 7 in the 8 p.m. hour, which will easily top the night in adults 18-49 (and all the key young adult demographics). But recently introduced lead-out game show “Candy Crush” continues to get crushed at a 1.4/ 2 (#2) at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was a decline of 65 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Big Brother” (4.0/ 7).
Also original last night were ABC game shows “Steve Harvey’s Funderdome” (#1: 2.6/ 4) and “The $100,000 Pyramind” (#1: 2.8/ 5) from 9-11 p.m., and “American Grit” on Fox (#4: 0.7/ 1 at 9 p.m.). All three were at typical household overnight levels

Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly Finishes No. 3 in Its Hour

The opening season of NBC News’s highly-touted newsmagazine Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly came to an end last night after an eight-episode run in NBC prime time.
The program was originally meant to run for around 10 episodes. It is planned to return to the NBC schedule after the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyongyang.
Many wonder if the show will indeed be back in the spring. But if Kelly’s tweet and her sign-off are any indication, the answer to that question is “yes” (at least as of now).
Here’s how Kelly signed off last night:
“That’s all for tonight, and for the summer run of this program. But soon, I’ll be seeing you in the mornings! I’ll be on at 9 a.m., right after Matt and Savannah — on our new show, ‘Megyn Kelly Today,’ starting on September 25th. And I’ll be back right here Sunday nights in the spring. We are so grateful to you for watching. I’m Megyn Kelly. For all of us here at NBC News… goodnight.”
The opening season of Sunday Night was highlighted by Kelly’s controversial interview with right-wing conspiracy theorist and provocateur Alex Jones. NBC News’s decision to air Kelly’s interview with Jones in episode three of the series angered many, with the uproar resulting in a number of advertiser pull-outs, NBC’s Connecticut station choosing not to air the show. and Kelly being un-invited from hosting a Sandy Hook benefit. Jones is well-known for pushing a conspiracy theory that the 2012 massacre in Sandy Hook was a hoax. That said, many media critics praised Kelly’s performance.
Then there’s the issue of ratings. Sunday Night co-executive producers told TVNewser prior to the show’s launch that success “wouldn’t be defined solely by ratings performance.” But advertisers often disagree, and ratings for the inaugural season were less than spectacular.Date / Total Viewers

After a nice premiere episode, Sunday Night delivered total viewer declines on a week-to-week basis until the season finale, which delivered the show’s largest audience since June 18 / Alex Jones. The final episode was +23 percent in total viewers from the July 23 installment (which had pushed back to 9 p.m. due to NASCAR overrun). Last night’s finale also delivered the show’s smallest gap with 60 Minutes in total viewers, A25-54 since that June 18 episode.
Aside from the week-to-week decline, here’s how the show fared against its 7 p.m. broadcast competition.
Aside from the series premiere, Sunday Night consistently finished third in total viewers behind CBS and ABC. While finishing behind repeats of 60 Minutes is nothing necessarily to be ashamed of, the network must be a bit disappointed that it finished behind ABC and its repeats of America’s Funniest Home Videos in the hour.

"Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" delivered 6.2 million viewers with its debut on June 4 featuring an interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Viewership dropped to 3.51 million viewers last night, which was the show's best total audience since a June 18 episode with controversial conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.
The network had announced before Kelly's Sunday program debuted in early June that it would be go off the air until the spring to make way for the top-rated "Sunday Night Football" after Labor Day.
Kelly's newsmagazine is slated to return after the NFL season and NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics.
The former Fox News star will now turn her attention to "Megyn Kelly Today," which is set to debut on Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. ET.
The program replaces "Today's Take," hosted by Al Roker and Tamron Hall, which regularly won its time slot against ABC and CBS.
Hall, the first black female anchor in the 65-year history of the "Today Show," parted ways with NBC after her program was canceled. She has since signed with the Weinstein Company to executive produce and host a daytime talk show on an as-yet-to-be-determined network.
Kelly came to NBC News in January after turning down a reported $25 million annual salary to stay at Fox News. The onetime attorney reportedly makes $17 million per year at NBC.

Eight episodes into the newsmagazine's maiden run, NBC has pulled "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" off the air, replacing it with original episodes of "Dateline."
The decision to end Kelly's summer run, previously reported by The New York Post's Page Six but little-noted beyond that, eliminates episodes that the network had put on its schedule for Aug. 6 and Aug. 13.
Kelly announced that her primetime show was going on hiatus at the tail end of Sunday night's broadcast. On the heels of a brief interview with comedian Ricky Gervais, Kelly signed off … but not for keeps. "That's all for tonight -- and for the summer run of this program," she said, before plugging her new morning show and assuring viewers "I'll be back right here, Sunday nights, in the spring."
People familiar with the situation said the first season of Kelly's primetime show had been slated to end on Sept. 3 at the latest, in order to make way for the return of "Sunday Night Football," but a fixed number of episodes was never set in stone.
After debuting on June 4 to 6.2 million viewers and a 1.2 rating in the news demo, the equivalent of around 1.44 million adults 25 to 54, Kelly's Sunday night show struggled to retain an audience. A controversial broadcast featuring an interview with conservative conspiracy theorist Alex Jones delivered just 961,000 demographically-relevant live-same-day viewers, and subsequent ratings fell even further from there.
According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, the eight episodes of "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" averaged 3.69 million viewers and a 0.8 in the 25-to-54 demo. By way of comparison, repeats of CBS's "60 Minutes" that aired directly opposite the Kelly show averaged 6.82 million viewers and 1.0 in the news demo, while encore episodes of ABC's "America's Most Wanted" drew 4.12 million viewers and a 1.0 rating among adults 25 to 54 in the same time slot.
As with most network newsmagazines, Kelly's show over-indexed on advertising for pharmaceuticals, auto manufacturers and financial services.
With the Sunday night show now up on blocks, Kelly is now free to focus on the launch of her new morning show, which is set to launch on Sept. 25. "Megyn Kelly Today" will air in NBC's 9 a.m. time slot, immediately following the two-hour "Today" block hosted by Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. Kelly's hour will lead into the bibulous 10 a.m. program hosted by Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford.
Kelly was already shooting for the approaching 9 a.m. debut on top of contributing a piece or two to the primetime show each week, a heavier load than contributors to ensemble newsmagazines shoulder, a person familiar with the situation said.
According to media buyers, the average cost of a 30-second commercial in "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" was between $35,000 and $40,000 a pop, while an ad in the current configuration of the 9 a.m. hour of "Today" runs anywhere between $15,000 and $20,000.
As NBC's coverage of the 2018 Winter Olympics wraps on Sunday, Feb. 25, Kelly won't return to her Sunday night slot until at least March. That said, for the sake of continuity, it's possible that the network will hold off on bringing Kelly back into the primetime fold until after April 1, when it plans to air a live production of the 1971 Broadway musical "Jesus Christ Superstar."
Kelly came to NBC News in May from Fox News Channel, where in her final year she averaged 533,000 adults 25 to 54 in her 9 p.m. weeknights slot following the now-defunct "The O'Reilly Factor." News of her multi-year, multi-million-dollar deal with NBC deal broke shortly after the arrival of the New Year.
