    Connell Foley, as of Feb. 17, has brought aboard recently retired U.S. District Judge Joel Pisano of the District of New Jersey—who the firm is planning to house, along with several other attorneys, at a new Newark office.

    Pisano, along with the firm's federal and bankruptcy practices, ultimately will be moved to the city, where Connell Foley was located until moving its headquarters to Roseland, N.J., in 1985, according to managing partner Michael McBride.

    "We want to make a commitment to Newark," McBride said. "We believe in Newark. We believe in the future of Newark. We believe all the major firms need to be there."

    ...Pisano was confirmed and received his commission in February 2000.

    The variety of matters handled is what makes federal judgeship so interesting, Pisano said.

    In recent years, Pisano handled multidistrict litigation against Merck & Co. over osteoporosis drug Fosamax, as well as an IP dispute between GlaxoSmithKline and Mylan Pharmaceuticals over generic Paxil that ended in a verdict of more than $100 million.

    There were criminal matters, too: Pisano estimates that he sentenced about 800 defendants over his many years on the bench.

    "I just hope that people thought that I was productive and fair and effective in getting cases resolved," he said.

    Pisano's retirement, which had been planned, accounts for one of the cluster of vacancies the District of New Jersey is facing...
