Michelle Wolf compares Ivanka Trump to herpes
Jul 2, 2018 | The Hill
By Emily Birnbaum
Comedian Michelle Wolf on Sunday compared President Trump’s daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump to herpes during a segment on her Netflix show.
Wolf also compared Trump to vaginal mesh, an implant used to treat pelvic organ prolapse that has recently come under fire for causing significant medical complications.
“Ivanka, you’re like vaginal mesh,” Wolf said in a segment about how to insult Trump administration officials in public. “You were supposed to support women, but now you have blood all over you and you’re at the center of a dozen lawsuits.”
Wolf's remarks are just the latest inflammatory comments from a celebrity directed toward a Trump administration official.
They come weeks after "Full Frontal" host Samantha Bee called Ivanka Trump a c--- and less than a month after Robert DeNiro said "f--- Trump" from the stage of the Tony Awards.
The insults have led to hand-wringing from some Democrats worried their party might lose the upper hand in a war over civility; others have said the insults risk making the left look extreme while riling up conservatives.
Others have argued that such criticisms are ridiculous and that it is important for President Trump's critics to rise up publicly and aggressively, regardless of their word choices.
Wolf herself has been a major character in this debate.
She caused a stir in Washington and gained national fame when she delivered a scathing monologue criticizing Trump administration officials, including White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Ivanka Trump, at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in May.
In the comments on her Netflix show, Wolf was riffing on the recent string of Trump administration officials who have faced protests in public: Sanders was asked to leave a Virginia restaurant, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was confronted by chanting protestors at a Mexican restaurant, and immigration protesters gathered outside of White House adviser Stephen Miller’s home.
Wolf said she agrees these officials should face pushback, but she said “you can’t just casually harass these people.”
“You have to insult them specifically,” Wolf said. “‘You’re a c---’ doesn’t hurt them. It’s on their vision board.”
She went through possible insults for Ivanka Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and others.
“Is your nickname herpes?” Wolf said of Trump. “Because you’re not necessarily the most dangerous person in the administration but you’re very unpleasant, totally incurable and you always show up when we’re about to get f---ed.”
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) last week encouraged people to peacefully protest Trump administration officials in public. Wolf said she agrees with Waters's call.

Anti-Trump comedian Michelle Wolf unleashed a vulgar attack on first daughter Ivanka Trump, comparing her to "vaginal mesh" and "herpes" during the latest episode of her Netflix show “The Break.”
Wolf started off by mocking the recent Republican National Committee ad that refers to a variety of Hollywood liberals as “unhinged.”
“Now is not the time to be hinged,” she said before declaring that she disagrees with calls for “civility.”
“These politicians, these people that we’re expected to be civil to, our public servants that we elected to do a job… they work for us,” Wolf said. “You can’t just casually harass these people. You have to insult them specifically.”
Last month, fellow liberal comedian Samantha Bee came under fire for calling Ivanka a “feckless c—t” on her TBS show “Full Frontal.” Wolf said that type of insult isn’t good enough because it “doesn’t hurt” before suggesting “life-alteringly hurtful” terms to use.
“If you see Ivanka on the street, first call her Tiffany. This will devastate her. Then talk to her in terms she’ll understand. Say, ‘Ivanka, you’re like vaginal mesh. You were supposed to support women but now you have blood all over you and you’re the center of a thousand lawsuits,’” Wolf said.
Wolf then went after Mitch McConnell and Scott Pruitt before throwing another jab at the first daughter.
“Ivanka, you’re like that birth control pill Yaz. At first, it seemed like you’d be really cool and helpful but you need to be immediately recalled,” Wolf said.
Wolf came back to Ivanka later in the uncouth segment after taking a few shots at Justice Clarence Thomas and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
“Is your nickname 'herpes'? Because you’re not necessarily the most dangerous person in the administration but you’re very unpleasant, totally incurable and you always show up when we’re about to get f----d,” Wolf said.
Wolf later called Ivanka the “prettiest tumor in a swiftly moving cancer.”
Conservative pundit Carmine Sabia questioned Wolf’s defenders who claim she mocks people on both sides of the political spectrum.
“Her entire shtick is her contempt for the president, his family and conservatives. They say she offends everyone but I have yet to see her take a swipe at a liberal in the same vitriolic way,” Sabia told Fox News. “Her jokes, if you can call them that, are beyond crude, they are offensive to anyone with a sense of decency.”
NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck called Wolf “the very definition of a bully.”
“Her jokes are so juvenile and, thankfully, Ivanka's a strong woman because Wolf's jokes are the crude, unfunny material,” Houck told Fox News.
Wolf has a history of attacking surrogates and family members of President Trump. She once called Eric Trump "an abortion" and famously took several personal jabs at Press Secretary Sarah Sanders during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“The left wants to lecture the president and supporters about how words matter and still try to connect him to The Capital Gazette shooting, but they proudly stand and support rhetoric from people like Wolf. If liberals didn't have double standards, they would have no standards,” Houck said.
Last month, Wolf poked fun at first lady Melania Trump by commenting on rumors that her 25-day stint away from the public eye was an effort to hide plastic surgery or even domestic violence during an episode of her Netflix show.
“After not being seen for 25 days, Melania has reappeared following her kidney surgery. Some people are saying this is Melania’s cover for plastic surgery, but I don’t buy that,” Wolf told her audience. “Her husband obviously loves her for who she is.”
The comedian continued by lamenting a reality where she would have to respect Melania as a “feminist icon.”
“Whatever really happened with Melania, I genuinely hope it doesn’t come out that Donald hurts her. One because that’s bad, and two then we couldn’t make fun of her anymore. We’d have to make her into this brave feminist icon and I don’t wanna do that!” she said before insulting her role. “I like making fun of Melania because she’s a bad first lady. She’s one of the worst we’ve ever had. I haven’t seen someone phone in this whole first lady thing since Betty Ford was still drinking.”

Michelle Wolf took aim at Ivanka Trump on her Netflix show over the weekend just two months after her polarizing performance at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner.
The comedian was encouraging her viewers to begin harassing politicians more often, and as an example of how best to engage offered up some ways to get under the first daughter's skin.
'If you see Ivanka on the street, first call her Tiffany. This will devastate her,' said Wolf.
'Then talk to her in terms she will understand. Say: "Ivanka, you’re like vaginal mesh. You were supposed to support women but now you have blood all over you and you’re the center of a thousand lawsuits."'
And she did not stop there.
Wolf went on to tell viewers how to harass Senator Mitch McConnell, embattled EPA head Scott Pruitt and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
Before she could get to Thomas however, she had another Ivanka joke she has thought of in the spot.
'Ivanka, you’re like that birth control pill Yaz,' said Wolf.
'At first, it seemed like you’d be really cool and helpful but you need to be immediately recalled.'
Wolf then returned to her tips on how to harass Thomas and later Betsy DeVos before finishing out the segment with Ivanka.
'Say hey girl, do your legs hurt, cause you been running afoul of government ethics all year,' said Wolf.
'And that will satisfy you more than it will hurt her, so follow that up with: "Is your nickname herpes?" Because you’re not necessarily the most dangerous person in the administration but you’re very unpleasant, totally incurable and you always show up when we’re about to get.'
She then closed out by calling Ivanka the 'prettiest tumor in a swiftly moving cancer.'
There was, of course, a great deal of backlash to Wolf's rant, which came in response to a newe Republican national Committee ad which called her and celebs such as Madonna, Johnny Depp and Representative Maxine Waters (D - CA) 'unhinged.'
'The RNC’s new push is to call the left ‘Unhinged 2018,' explained Wolf, who in the ad is seen comparing Huckabee Sanders to Uncle Tom.
'Yeah, like a screen door installed by a blind lesbian, I am unhinged!'
She later noted: 'Right now there are two things that should be unhinged: people and those doors to the child cages.'
James Woods was quick to fire back on Monday, tweeting: 'If this character is the barometer of contemporary political "comedy," Republicans are going to be in power for a long, long time. #UnhingedDemocrats'
Fox News described Wolf's remarks as a 'vulgar attack' during an 'uncouth segment,' not mentioning at any point in its story that Wolf was laughing throughout the segment, which was meant to be a joke.

Comedian Michelle Wolf Compares Ivanka Trump to 'Herpes': 'Very Unpleasant, Totally Incurable'

Two months after she came under fire for her White House Correspondents’ Dinner jokes about Sarah Huckabee Sanders, comedian Michelle Wolf is doubling down on her criticism of the Trump administration, this time taking aim at first daughter Ivanka Trump.
On her Netflix show The Break this week, Wolf, 33, said she agreed with Rep. Maxine Waters’ recent suggestion that Trump officials should be publicly confronted. And the comedian shared some very specific ideas for critics who may come face-to-face with President Trump‘s elder daughter and adviser.
“You can’t just casually harass these people, you have to insult them specifically,” Wolf said. “ ‘You’re a c–t’ doesn’t hurt them. It’s on their vision board.”
Pretending to address Ivanka, 36, Wolf said: “Is your nickname herpes? Because you’re not necessarily the most dangerous person in the administration but you’re very unpleasant, totally incurable and you always show up when we’re about to get f–ked.”
Wolf also compared Ivanka to the birth control pill Yaz, saying, “At first it seemed like it’d be really cool and helpful, but you need to be immediately recalled.”
The comedian then suggested calling Ivanka “Tiffany,” the name of her younger and less publicly visible half-sister.
“If you see Ivanka on the street, first call her Tiffany. This will devastate her,” Wolf said. “Then, talk to her in terms she will understand. Say, ‘Ivanka, you’re like vaginal mesh. You were supposed to support women, but now you have blood all over you and you’re the center of a thousand lawsuits.’ ”
In an article on Monday, Fox News condemned Wolf’s comments as a “vulgar attack” against the first daughter.
Some people on Twitter agreed that Wolf’s remarks were out of line, while others applauded the comedian for “not backing down.”
Wolf’s comments come amid an internal debate among Democrats about how aggressively to confront the president and members of his administration.
After White House press secretary Sarah Sanders was recentlyasked to leave the Lexington, Virginia, restaurant the Red Hen because she works for Trump, Rep. Waters urged attendees at a rally to keep “push[ing] back” against members of the Trump administration with similar confrontations.
“If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” she said.
Some Democrats reacted by seeking to distance themselves from Waters’ remarks, while Trump and other conservatives strongly condemned her comments and made calls for “civility.” But those calls were quickly criticized as hypocritical in light of the president’s own habit of verbally attacking his enemies.
Wolf faced some backlash in April after she mocked Sanders at the White House Correspondents’ dinner, saying “she burns facts, and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye.” New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski and others faulted Wolf for what they perceived to be cracks about Sanders’ appearance.
But Wolf refused to apologize, and insisted her remarks had nothing to do with Sanders’ looks.
“All these jokes were about her despicable behavior,” Wolf said at the time.

Michelle Wolf compares Ivanka Trump to herpes: 'Very unpleasant, totally incurable'
Jul 3, 2018 | USA Today
By Maeve McDermott
Michelle Wolf's controversy-courting comments about Sarah Huckabee Sanders at the White House Correspondents' Dinner paled in comparison to her routine on Sunday's episode of "The Break," the comedian's Netflix show.
With calls for "civility" in the news following the Red Hen restaurant's booting of Sanders last month, Wolf took the opposite approach, encouraging viewers to go public and get creative with their insults against Trump administration figures.
"You’re a (expletive) doesn’t hurt them, it’s on their vision board," said Wolf, invoking the expletive that recently got her fellow late-night host Samantha Bee in trouble. "You have to make sure your words are life-alteringly hurtful. You gotta hit their deepest insecurities with the hot venom of a teenager from a broken home."
After taking aim at EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and Secretary of Education Betsy Devos, Wolf unleashed her worst on Ivanka Trump, instructing viewers, “If you see Ivanka on the street, first call her ‘Tiffany.’ This will devastate her."

"Then, talk to her in terms she will understand," Wolf continued. "Say, ‘Ivanka, you’re like vaginal mesh. You were supposed to support women, but now you have blood all over you and you’re the center of a thousand lawsuits. (You’re) like that birth control pill Yaz, at first it seemed like it’d be really cool and helpful, but you need to be immediately recalled."
"Is your nickname herpes?" she asked Ivanka. "Because you’re not necessarily the most dangerous person in the administration but you’re very unpleasant, totally incurable and you always show up when we’re about to get (expletive)."
In an interview with USA TODAY about "The Break," Wolf previewed these kinds of "joke-forward" segments, explaining how she planned to distinguish her late-night show from the competition.
"Right now, a lot of people are doing very politically heavy shows, and they’re all doing it very well," she said. "But you’re never going to come on my show and hear me talk about net neutrality for 20 minutes (John Oliver-style). “I will not be that responsible. I’m trying to hit the topics they might not be hitting. Especially because I’m a woman, I felt like I could talk about things from a different perspective.”
"The Break" airs Sundays on Netflix.

The eight best things to watch on Netflix in July
Jul 2, 2018 | The Irish Times
By Jennifer Gannon
The Bleeding Edge (Netflix, July 27th)
Netflix’s latest documentary comes from the award-winning filmmakers behind The Hunting Ground and The Invisible War, Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, The Bleeding Edge is an investigation into America’s $400 billion medical device industry.Weaving the narrative between individual stories and pragmatic, factual argument, the film focuses on serious issues that consumers have experienced with products such as Essure, the permanent contraception used by millions of American women, a “vaginal mesh” used in gynaecological procedures as well as robotic surgery which is becoming more widely used to treat patients for hip replacements and hysterectomies.
Exposing negligent practices, problems with lobbyists, and insufficient legislation and regulations, the film points the finger at the relationship between the FDA and medical product distribution companies, which has become more intertwined since the beginning of the Trump administration and the appointment of current FDA head Scott Gottlieb.
It’s a stark, damning look at how the healthcare system in America, embroiled in big business, is failing to aid those in need – especially its women.
