PV module shipments in Japan rose to 7.04GW in the nine months to 31 December, up sharply from approximately 5.84GW in the first three quarters of 2013, according to new data from the Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA).The figures show that the country may be on track to surpass the 8.63GW of solar panels shipped in the fiscal year to 31 March, 2014.
Deliveries fell slightly from about 2.6GW in the second quarter of 2014 to 2.46GW in the October-December period, suggesting that the halt on grid-access applications last autumn by half of the nation’s utilities had a limited near-term impact on demand.
Domestic shipments accounted for the bulk of orders in the third quarter of 2014, jumping from about 2.04GW during the same period a year earlier to 2.24GW.
Japanese manufacturers continued to dominate the domestic market in the final three months of 2014, delivering roughly 1.48GW of the domestic shipment total.
The JPEA surveyed 40 solar manufacturers, including domestic heavyweights Sharp and Kyocera, as well as foreign players such as Yingli, Canadian Solar and Suntech Power Japan.
