    Suntech Press Release

  1. Suntech Opens Warehouse in Cape Town

    Mar 23, 2015 | PR Newswire

Wuxi Suntech Power Co., Ltd. has officially announced the establishment of a local warehouse in Cape Town, South Africa. This new facility will initially store 500kW of modules and will expand its storage capacity to 1MW later in 2015. Suntech established a full time presence in South Africa in 2014 as part of its expansion efforts in the region.

"The opening of a local warehouse in Cape Town will allow Suntech to increase its sales capacity in South Africa, and in the South African Development Community, which serves as a free trade zone. We are also eliminating the effort involved in the PV modules shipping and importation procedure, which will help our customers to better plan their project schedules," said Joey Zheng, Regional Director to Suntech's Africa and South Asia markets. "With a growing number of sales to larger scale projects, we will now be able to assure that all of our customers will have their products within 24 hours after purchase, whereas previously it took 40 days for modules to be delivered from China," Zheng added.

Recently, Suntech supplied 100 MW of its high-efficiency PV modules to two projects selected during the Department of Energy's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program's (REIPPPP) first bid round.

"Under the ownership of Shunfeng Clean Energy (SFCE), Suntech has the strongest balance sheet in the industry and was recently added to Bloomberg New Energy Finance's (BNEF) Tier 1 solar company list," said Victor Xiong, President of Wuxi Suntech. "We are now part of the largest integrated clean energy generation company in the world. I am confident that our partners and customers will see how our clean energy ecosystem brings value to solar energy development, which is especially relevant in supporting the growing electricity needs in South Africa and in the wider region," he added.

Suntech will be present at Power & Electricity World Africa 2015 in Johannesburg from March 24-25, 2015. The team will be exhibiting the following products: a solar home system, which is an all-inclusive DC power system, the STP265-20/Wem and STP315-24/Vem modules for on grid systems, and the STP140D-12/TEA and STP085D-12/BEA modules for off-grid systems.

  2. Suntech Strengthens South Africa Presence with New Storage Warehouse

    Mar 23, 2015 | Ian Clover

    By PV Magazine

China’s Wuxi Suntech Power Co. has announced that it has established a storage warehouse in the South African city of Cape Town as part of the company’s growth strategy into the burgeoning sub-Saharan African solar market.

Initially capable of storing 500 kW of solar modules, the facility will be expanded to 1 MW later this year, and follows on from Suntech establishing a full-time presence in South Africa in 2014.

The module manufacturer recently supplied 100 MW of its high-efficiency PV modules to two South African PV projects selected under the first bidding round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP).

This deal forms just a small portion of the company’s plans for this growing market, while a permanent presence at the tip of the continent eases Suntech’s shipping strategy to other African countries.

"The opening of a local warehouse in Cape Town will allow Suntech to increase its sales capacity in South Africa, and in the South African Development Community, which serves as a free trade zone," said Suntech’s regional director to Africa and South Asia markets, Joey Zheng. "We are also eliminating the effort involved in the PV modules shipping and importation procedure, which will help our customers to better plan their project schedules."

Zheng added that the warehouse will serve the company’s relationship with developers planning large-scale PV projects in South Africa, enabling 24-hour delivering times rather than the average wait of 40 days developers had to contend with when panels were shipped in from China.

Wuxi Suntech president Victor Xiong added that, under the ownership of Shunfeng Clean Energy – which acquired Suntech in 2014 – the company is now a prominent member of the Tier-1 solar company club, which will mean even more ambitious expansion projects in the near future.

"I am confident that our partners and customers will see how our clean energy ecosystem brings value to solar energy development, which is especially relevant in supporting the growing electricity needs in South Africa and in the wider region," said Xiong.

  3. Suntech to Open South Africa Warehouse, Doubts Over Manufacturing Plans

    Mar 23, 2015 | PV Tech

    By John Parnell

Module manufacturer Suntech appears to have rowed back on plans to establish a manufacturing hub in South Africa.

In July 2014, the company unveiled a new subsidiary to serve the African market with the potential for a local manufacturing presence.

Then CEO Eric Luo said: “Given the country's dedication to growing renewable energies, Suntech is exploring the potential of locating manufacturing, assembly and warehousing facilities as well as offering after-sales services in the market. This would enable Suntech to quickly supply a greater volume of PV modules to meet growing demand and serve as a gateway to additional markets in the region.”

However, in a statement released on Monday, the company only committed to warehousing.

“The opening of a local warehouse in Cape Town will allow Suntech to increase its sales capacity in South Africa, and in the South African Development Community, which serves as a free trade zone,” said Joey Zheng, regional director, Africa and South Asia, Suntech. “We are also eliminating the effort involved in the PV modules shipping and importation procedure, which will help our customers to better plan their project schedules,” added Zheng.

The warehouse will initially have a 500kW capacity with plans to expand that to 1MW later in the year.

“With a growing number of sales to larger scale projects, we will now be able to assure that all of our customers will have their products within 24 hours after purchase, whereas previously it took 40 days for modules to be delivered from China,” claimed Zheng.

PV Tech asked Suntech for confirmation of the status of its plans to establish a manufacturing base in the country and was awaiting a response at the time of press.

The company also said in the statement that it had recently delivered 100MW of modules for two projects under the first round of the country’s renewable energy independent power producer programme (REIPPP). The contracts were announced in 2012 and were connected in April 2014.

Delays to the most recent round of the REIPPP led the country's trade group to raise concerns about the impact any indecision from the government could have on investment appetite in the region.

  4. Deals and Company News from the Global Solar Sector This Week

Deals and company news from the global solar sector this week

China’s JinkoSolar and DuPont will collaborate on efforts to improve the efficiency, durability and reliability of PV cells and modules. Under a new strategic collaboration agreement, DuPont will supply JinkoSolar with advanced materials, including its Solamet PV19x photovoltaic metallization pastes and Tedlar polyvinyl fluoride films. They did not reveal the terms of the deal.

Wuxi Suntech Power has opened a 500kW warehouse in Cape Town, South Africa, with plans to expand the facility to 1MW of storage space later this year. The warehouse will enable the company to expand its sales in the country, while eliminating the need to ship PV modules in from other markets, it said in a statement. Suntech opened an office in South Africa last year.

Sungevity, the US residential PV installer backed by E.ON, will launch into the commercial market, adding its name to the lengthening list of companies that see commercial rooftops as the next big growth market in US solar. Sungevity will team with Washington DC-based Sol Systems, a solar financing specialist, to target commercial systems in the 50-300kW range, which it describes as an “underserved” market. Behind SolarCity and Vivint Solar, Sungevity was the third largest installer of US residential PV systems last year. Unlike its closest rivals, however, Sungevity does not install systems in-house, but rather uses downstream partners. The technology-focused company grabbed the attention of the global solar industry last year when it attracted an equity investment from Germany’s E.ON. The two are jointly targeting the Dutch rooftop market and are expected to broaden their focus to other European countries.
