Rivlin and Netanyahu refuse to meet Jimmy Carter over his 'anti-Israel stance'
Apr 20, 2015 | Haaretz (English and Hebrew)
By Barak Ravid
President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have rejected a request from former U.S. President Jimmy Carter to meet during the latter's visit to Israel in the coming weeks, a senior official in Jerusalem told Haaretz.
The official said that Rivlin and Netanyahu rejected the request after inner consultations over the last few days between the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Council of the Prime Minister's Office.
Rivlin's refusal to meet with Carter was first reported Monday night on Channel 10. It is not yet clear if in light of the senior government official's refusal to meet with him, Carter will decide to cancel his visit.
According to the senior official, the Foreign Ministry recommended that Rivlin and Netanyahu not meet with Carter because of what they termed his "anti-Israeli stance" over the last few years, particularly during the summer war in Gaza.
During the war, Carter voiced harsh criticism on Israel and called to remove Hamas from the American State Department's list of terror organizations.
The senior official added that Carter has also requested to visit Gaza during his visit, and that Israel had approved that request.

Israel snubs Carter over 'anti-Israel' views
Apr 20, 2015 | Ynet News (English)
By Itamar Eichner
President Reuven Rivlin heeded the Foreign Ministry's advice and decided not to meet former US President Jimmy Carter and former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Brundtland when they visit the region.
Carter and Brundtlend will arrive on April 30 for a 3-day trip to Israel, the Palestinian Authority territories, and the Gaza Strip, where they are expected to meet Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Israel officially decided to boycott Carter's visit, although it will not prevent him from entering Israel or entering the Gaza Strip through the Erez crossing.

Sources in the Foreign Ministry said the reason they were boycotting Carter's visit was because he consistently helps delegitimize Israel and that any meeting with an Israeli official would only contribute to this process.
Carter will arrive in the region on an emergency mission, mainly intended to mediate between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas in Gaza, which he believes is nearing a breaking point.
Carter has been vocally critical of Israel in recent years. He has referred to Israeli "apartheid" numerous times. Last year Carter wrote that "Hamas cannot be wished away, nor will it cooperate in its own demise.
"Only by recognizing its legitimacy as a political actor - one that represents a substantial portion of the Palestinian people - can the West begin to provide the right incentives for Hamas to lay down its weapons
Carter has visited Israel in the last few years, but former President Shimon Peres would generally meet him – even he spent the meetings criticizing the former president's views.

Rivlin Refuses to Meet with Former US President Carter
Apr 20, 2015 | Maariv (Hebrew)
By Dana Somberg
The President Reuven Rivlin has refused to meet with former US President Jimmy Carter
In recent years Carter has become one of the most prominent opponents of Israel in the world, such examples include his statement during the Gaza operation Defensive Edge in which he stated, "there is no justification in what Israel is doing."
Three months ago, Carter on the popular television show hosted by Jon Stewart , and was asked if he believes there is another factor besides the religious factor in the terrorist attack that took place in Paris. "Yes," he answered with pursed lips and frowning. " The Palestinian problem. The people who suffer the West Bank and Gaza." The message was clear: "Israel's policy toward the Palestinians is one of the reasons for Islamic terrorism in European cities".
Those that follow Jimmy Carters evolution of hostility to Israel were not surprised by his statement that added Israel to the list of those responsible for Islamic terrorism.
"Carter continues to demonstrate his prejudice against Jews and Israel," stated CEO of the Anti-Defamation League Abraham Foxman. In a press release, which harshly condemned the statement by Carter, Foxman said "his comments on Jon Stewarts show revealed Carter’s insensitivity towards the victims of the Paris attack and their families."
President Jimmy Carter is remembered as the middleman between Israel and Egypt, and after 13 days in Camp David Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat achieved a peace agreement. After one term in the White House which was a sequence of failures, Carter was defeated in the presidential election in 1980 by Ronald Reagan. He founded the "Carter Center" in order to continue what he called "humanitarian operations". In 2002, Carter won the Nobel Prize for this activity.
"Recognize Hamas as a legitimate organization"
Carter has on several occasions also expressed sympathy and support for Hamas. He said that Hamas is a legitimate organization. In an article published last year he wrote that "Hamas ca not be ignored only by recognizing Hamas as a legitimate political movement can the west demand that it lay down its arms."
Carter's support for Hamas provoked harsh criticism against him. Law professor Alan Dershowitz argued that by supporting Hamas Carter is breaking US law and should be put on trial. US Jewish leaders argue that Carter's opinions and views express clear anti-Semitic feelings.
"He had a hidden hatred towards Israel even when he served as President - hate that now he reveals and expresses openly by unfounded criticism against Israel and by support for Hamas," said Michael Bard, CEO of American Israeli Interface in an interview with NewsMax.

President Rivlin Refused to Meet with the Former President Carter Due to his Anti-Israeli Positions
Apr 21, 2015 | Nana 10 (Channel 10)
By Moav Vardi
President Reuven Rivlin has refused to meet former US President Jimmy Carter, who is to visit Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Gaza, in the upcoming days, due to his anti-Israeli views.
In recent years Carter has become one of the most prominent critics of Israel in the world, as reflected in during the Gaza operation “Defensive Edge”, when he stated "There is no justification in what Israel is doing." In addition, Carter called for Obama to remove Hamas from the list of terrorist organizations during the war, and Israel sees this as "red flag".
A senior diplomatic source told News 10 that Carter is permanently damaging to Israel and that Israel's leaders should refrain from meeting with him. President's Office personnel are those who advised President Rivlin not to meet with Carter.
The Former US President has visited Israel several times in recent years and all those times he met former President Shimon Peres at the presidential palace in Jerusalem, who stated that he should listen to his opinions.
The cool relations between Rivlin and Carter began in 2010, when Rivlin at the time the Speaker of Parliament, attacked Carter and criticized the activities of an organization which met with the head of Hamas's political bureau, Khaled Meshal and Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.
Rivlin said that the meetings are perceived in Israel as “support for Hamas and an encouragement of terrorism". Carter replied saying that the purpose of the meeting was to" bring peace to the region ".

Rivlin refuses meeting in Israel with former US president Jimmy Carter
Apr 20, 2015 | Jerusalem Post (English)
By Dana Somberg
President Reuven Rivlin has refused to meet with former US president Jimmy Carter during his upcoming visit to the region, due to his stances over recent years seen as "anti-Israel."
In recent years, Carter has become one of the most prominent critics of Israel, notably when during last summer's war with Hamas he denounced the IDF's Operation Protective Edge in Gaza as illegitimate.
An Israeli diplomatic official told The Jerusalem Post's Hebrew sister publication Ma'ariv that the Foreign Ministry recommended Rivlin not meet with Carter, in order to transmit the message that those who harm Israel will not meet with the president.
Carter is reported expected to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories in the coming weeks.
Carter has criticized successive US administrations for failing to clinch an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. He has advocated controversial positions, chief among them that the West should engage Hamas in diplomatic negotiations.http://www.jpost.com/Israel-News/Politics-And-Diplomacy/Rivlin-refuses-meeting-in-Israel-with-former-US-president-Jimmy-Carter-398739

The President and the Prime Minister Refuse to Meet with Jimmy Carter

Former US President Jimmy Carter, is persona non grata in Israel. This was the unusual recommendation that was given by the Foreign Ministry. As a result the President and the Prime Minister will not meet with the former US President.
The senior Political level of the Foreign Ministry recently recommended not to accept a meeting with former US President Jimmy Carter. The reason is that Carter regularly speaks out against Israel, called on President Barack Obama to recognize Hamas, during operation Defensive Edge , which he called "a humanitarian catastrophe that Israel is executing" . A diplomatic source said that Carter is far from an objective friend to Israel and therefore formulated this recommendation.

Netanyahu and Rivlin refuse to meet with Jimmy Carter
Apr 20, 2015 | Times of Israel
By Tamar Pileggi
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin have turned down invitations to meet with former US president Jimmy Carter during his upcoming visit to Israel over his “anti-Israel” views.
Both the president and prime minister declined the invitations after consulting with the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Council.
A senior diplomatic official told Channel 10, which broke the news, that Carter is “a disaster for Israel,” and that all Israeli leaders should refrain from meeting the former president, due to his “anti-Israel positions.”
The official was also quoted as saying that while Netanyahu and Rivlin refused to meet with him, Israel had approved Carter’s request to visit the Gaza Strip.
Carter will reportedly arrive sometime in the next 10 days for meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
In recent years, Carter has become an increasingly outspoken critic of Israel’s policies and of Netanyahu.
During Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza last year, Carter charged that there was “no justification in the world for what Israel is doing.” He also accused Netanyahu of blocking steps toward a two-state solution and working toward a “Greater Israel.”

In 2010, when he was Knesset speaker, Rivlin hosted Carter in his office and rebuked him over his meetings with Hamas officials, telling him that the Israeli public considered him a “Hamas supporter” and perceived his actions as encouraging terrorism. Rivlin also hosted Carter in 2009.
Rivlin’s office said Monday night that the president had accepted the Foreign Ministry’s recommendation not to meet with Carter on this visit.
Carter was the subject of much criticism in Israel over his 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” in which he wrote: “Israel’s continued control and colonization of Palestinian land have been the primary obstacles to a comprehensive peace agreement in the Middle East.”
In 2013, Carter called on the European Union to label products from West Bank settlements, which, he argued, are illegal under international law, although he rejected a full economic boycott to pressure Israel over the settlements.
In a recent interview with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, he said Israel should to give up the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, while the Palestinians “make sure that they commit themselves without equivocation to the freedom of Israel to live in peace alongside them.”

Netanyahu, Rivlin refuse to meet Jimmy Carter during trip to Israel
Apr 20, 2015 | i24 News (English)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin rejected a request from former US President Jimmy Carter to meet with him during a planned trip to Israel, Haaretz reported Monday.
A senior official told the Israeli daily that the Foreign Ministry recommended that the Israeli leaders not meet with Carter because of his "anti-Israeli stance" over the last few years.
The National Security Council of the Prime Minister's Office and the Foreign Ministry held inner consultations on the matter and decided to advise Rivlin and Netanyahu to refuse to meet the US president.
At this stage there has been no response from Carter as to whether he will cancel his visit in light of Netanyahu and Rivlin's refusal to meet with him.
One of the main reasons for the refusal to meet Carter is because of his stance during the war in Gaza last summer, the official said, according to Ha'aretz.
While rockets were being fired at Israeli targets on a daily basis during the bloody conflict with Hamas, Carter called to remove Hamas from the American State Department's list of terror organizations.
The former US president had requested to visit Gaza during his visit to the region, a request that Israel had approved, the official said.

Rivlin Refuses to Meet with Jimmy Carter Over Anti-Israel Views
Apr 20, 2015 | Channel 7 News (English and Hebrew)
By Tova Dvorin
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has refused to meet former US President Jimmy Carter in an upcoming visit to Israel, the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Gaza due to his anti-Israeli views, Channel 10 reports Monday.
A senior diplomatic source told the news agency that Carter, who has a long history of antagonism towards Israel, is "permanently damaging" to Israel and that Israel's leaders should refrain from meeting with him, on principle. Rivlin's advisors have said the same.
In May 2014, the former President supported the Palestine Liberation Organization's (PLO) unilateral push to join international organizations in breach of the ongoing peace talks with Israel and the 1993 Oslo Accords.
The year before, he called on the European Union (EU) to label productscoming from "illegal Israeli settlements" - despite the fact that Israel's presence in Judea and Samaria is legal under international law.
In 2006, Carter wrote a book entitled "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid." His claims in the book, which he continued to espouse even after factual errors were revealed, led the reporting accuracy group CAMERA to say that the ex-president “clearly has an Israel, and even a Jewish problem.”

Israel: Leaders Decline to Meet Carter
Apr 20, 2015 | New York Times
By Jodi Rudoren
Israel’s president and prime minister have declined requests for meetings with former President Jimmy Carter, who has long been a harsh critic of Israel’s policy toward the Palestinians. Mr. Carter has been persona non grata in Israel at least since his 2006 book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” and he prompted further ire during last summer’s war between Israel and Hamas, the militant Palestinian group that dominates the Gaza Strip. Mr. Carter, 90, called for an international investigation into Israel’s prosecution of the war and renewed his plea to remove Hamas from Washington’s list of terrorist groups. Jason Pearlman, a spokesman for President Reuven Rivlin of Israel, said Mr. Rivlin had declined Mr. Carter’s request to meet based on the Foreign Ministry’s counsel. When Mr. Carter visited Jerusalem in 2012 with a group of former leaders called The Elders, he met with Shimon Peres, then president, but said he had been denied meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet.

Netanyahu Refuses to Meet With 'Anti-Israel' Jimmy Carter
Apr 21, 2015 | NewsMax
By Joel Himmlefarb
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin say they will not meet with former President Jimmy Carter during his coming visit to the area, The Times of Israel reported Monday.
A senior diplomatic official told Israel's Channel 10 that the former U.S. president — who is also to visit Hamas-ruled Gaza during his visit to the region, slated to begin sometime in the next 10 days — is "a disaster for Israel."
The official said that all Israeli leaders should refrain from meeting the former president because of his "anti-Israel positions."
Israeli officials say that in recent years Carter has become increasingly strident in his attacks on the Jewish state.
During Israel's war with Hamas last year, Carter declared that there was "no justification in the world for what Israel is doing." He also slammed Netanyahu for allegedly blocking steps toward a "two-state solution" — creation of an independent Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel.
When Rivlin was Knesset speaker in 2010, he hosted Carter in his office and rebuked him for his meetings with Hamas representatives, telling the former U.S. president that Israelis perceive his behavior to be encouraging terrorism and regard him as a "Hamas supporter. In January, after Carter suggested that the International Criminal Court investigate both Israel and Hamas for war crimes, Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said the notion that Israel is in any way comparable to Hamas "is so obnoxious and so hypocritical and so typical of Jimmy Carter" that the world understands that the ex-president "has made himself irrelevant and tossed himself into the trash pan of history."
He added that Carter "never met a terrorist he didn't like. He loved Yasser Arafat and hated every Israeli leader he ever met.
Carter's behavior is "sad, because he was president of the United States and people listen," Dershowitz said. "What we should do is stop listening to him."

Israeli Prime Minister, President Reject Invitations to Meet with Jimmy Carter
Apr 20, 2015 | The Washington Free BEacon
By Abraham Rabinovich
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin have rejected invitations to meet with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on his visit to the region in about 10 days.
A senior Israeli official said the reason was Carter’s “anti-Israel” views, particularly views he expressed during last year’s war in the Gaza Strip.
Carter was granted a visit to the Gaza Strip via an Israeli checkpoint. He is expected to meet with Palestinian leaders on the West Bank. It is not clear whether he will attempt to meet with other prominent Israelis, such as former President Shimon Peres.
The rejection of the invitations by Netanyahu and Rivlin came after consultation with the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Council, an Israeli official said.
Carter has been an increasingly outspoken critic of Israel in recent years. During Israel’s war with Hamas last summer in which Israel shelled and bombed the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Hamas’ rocketing of Israeli towns, the former president said, there was “no justification in the world for what Israel is doing.”
He has also been a consistent critic of Israeli settlement in the West Bank, which he has termed illegal under international law. Although he rejected a full economic boycott to pressure Israel on the settlement issue, he did call on the European Union to have products originating in the settlements labeled as such.
In 1978, during his term as president, Carter invited then Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to meet in Camp David for peace talks. During 12 days of arduous negotiations, with both sides packing their bags in anger, the president played a key stabilizing role.
When talks deadlocked, he met separately with the two leaders—without aides—as he explored ways to bridge the differences. The agreement he brokered led the following year to a peace treaty, the first between Israel and an Arab state.

Rivlin, Netanyahu spurn meeting with Jimmy Carter in Israel
Apr 20, 2015 | JTA
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected invitations to meet with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
The invitations reportedly were declined after consulting with the Foreign Ministry and the National Security Council, Haaretz reported Monday.
Carter, who reportedly will visit Israel in the coming weeks, has planned meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
The spurned invitation by Rivlin was first reported on Israel’s Channel 10.
An unnamed senior government official said the recommendation to not meet with Carter came over his “anti-Israeli stance” in recent years, including his strong criticism of Israel during last summer’s conflict with Gaza.
Israel did, however, approve Carter’s request to visit Gaza.
Carter, who wrote a book titled “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid,” is a member of The Elders, an international group of elder statesmen who advance peace and reconciliation. Carter also has called for the labeling of goods that originate in the West Bank, and said that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was among the factors that led to the deadly attacks in January in Paris.

Apr 20, 2015 | JSS News (French)
By Michael Solomon
