meteocontrol first PV service company to exceed 10 GWp mark for monitored solar power
May 5, 2015 | ESDM
meteocontrol has become the first PV service company to exceed 10 GWp of monitored power.
As a front-runner among the inverter-independent providers of PV monitoring systems, meteocontrol has roughly 37,500 monitored PV systems, covering a total area of 3,746 soccer fields. The total power is equivalent to connecting 3.8 nuclear power plants the size of the Gundremmingen plant in Germany to the grid.
The PV systems are primarily monitored with the proven data loggers WEB’log and the new blue’Log X series. meteocontrol can, however, also add data from different systems from third-party providers to the central platform. In addition to remote monitoring of commercial PV systems with its Industrial Line, meteocontrol also offers product solutions for the private sector. With over 30 years of experience, meteocontrol offers sophisticated product solutions and comprehensive services.
meteocontrol is a member of SFCE Shunfeng International Clean Energy Ltd and is headquartered in Augsburg. With subsidiaries in Moers, Milan, Lyon and Madrid, a sister company in the United States, and numerous partner companies, meteocontrol is internationally active and has so far been involved in projects with a total investment volume of more than 13 billion euros.
The focus of its product developments and services is on the grid-specific and country-specific requirements for implementing feed-in management. With the recent launch of its blue’Log X data logger series, meteocontrol also offers a system that makes monitoring even more secure and efficient. Live measured values ensure quick response times and maximum yield assurance.

SolarWorld to introduce five busbars to U.S. production
May 4, 2015 | PV-Magazine
By Jonathan Gifford
The move towards three, four and five busbar technology continues apace, with SolarWorld the latest to indicate a shift to five busbar deployment. The module producer has indicated that its application of five busbars will result in a cell efficiency of 21.51%, on PERC cells utilizing n-type c-Si wafers.
SolarWorld says up to 2% efficiency boost can be achieved using five busbars. The company reports that modification of its existing stringer systems will allow for the five-busbar approach to be realized. Modifications will be completed during Q2 2015, although the volume of five-busbar production has not been released.
The German-based company with manufacturing in both its European facilities and in the U.S. aims to achieve a 300W 60-cell module by Q3 of this year.
Last month Chinese manufacturer Suntech announced that it was employing four busbar equipment to all of its GW-scale cell production.
Along with increasing the number of busbars, allowing for thinner and taller busbars to be deployed, ‘busbarless’ technology is slowly being introduced into the market. Most commonly seen in high-efficiency applications at this stage, busbarless contacting employs a wire mesh instead of silver busbars to connect cells.
European Equipment suppliers Schmid and Meyer Burger are introducing their busbarless technologies in the form of the Multi Busbar Connector and SmartWire products respectively. GT Advanced Technologies, from the U.S., also offers busbarless technology in the form of Merlin. GT claims a three-to-five percent efficiency boost through the application of Merlin interconnection technology.
Busbarless production equipment was featured in pv magazine's 50 Technology Highlights publication that was unveiled at last week's SNEC trade show and is available for free download here.
