A recent study conducted on new blood thinners and their potential gastrointestinal bleeding risks found that Xarelto (clinically known as rivaroxaban) and Pradaxa (dabigatran) could be more dangerous than warfarin. The latter was once the industry standard, but has since been replaced by Xarelto and Pradaxa in hopes of finding a safer, lower maintenance drug. Recent Xarelto lawsuits indicate this may not be the case at all, however, as many people have sustained serious internal bleeding injuries while taking the anticoagulant.

Xarelto is a blood-thinning drug, or anticoagulant. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xarelto in July 2011, and its sales have steadily grown since then. While bleeding is a common complication associated with anticoagulants, it has been alleged that Xarelto is more dangerous than traditional blood thinners because no antidote exists to reverse its blood-thinning side effects.

  1. Federal Xarelto Lawsuits Progress with Issuance of New Order Governing Plaintiffs' Fact Sheets

    May 18, 2015 | Bernstein Liebhard LLP

    By PRWeb

Hundreds of federally-filed Xarelto lawsuits (http://www.xareltolawsuit2015.com/) continue to move forward in a federal multidistrict litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana. According to a Pretrial Order dated May 4, 2015, all plaintiffs who have individual cases pending in the proceeding are now required to complete a Plaintiff Fact Sheet. Among other things, the Order stipulates that a signed and verified Fact Sheet, along with all signed and dated Authorizations and responsive documents be submitted to Defendants within 60 days of the Order's entry, or within 60 day's of a lawsuit's filing or transfer to the Eastern District of Louisiana, whichever is longer. (In Re: Xarelto Products Liability Litigation, No. 2592)

"Plaintiff Fact Sheets serve as an efficient way to obtain initial disclosures regarding a claimant's medical background and other issues relevant to their cases. Our Firm is representing federal Xarelto lawsuit plaintiffs, and we are pleased that discovery is moving forward in the multidistrict litigation," says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective medical devices and drugs. The Firm is actively filing Xarelto lawsuits in U.S. courts, and continues to evaluate claims on behalf of individuals who allegedly suffered a life-threatening internal bleeding episode, a stroke, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism due to their use of this blood thinner.

    Xarelto Litigation
Court documents indicate that at least 434 Xarelto lawsuits have been filed in the federal litigation currently underway in the Eastern District of Louisiana. More than 200 similar complaints are pending in a mass tort program underway in Pennsylvania's Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. (In Re: Xarelto Litigation, Case ID 150102349) All of these lawsuits similarly accuse the manufacturers of Xarelto of wrongly marketing the blood thinner as an improvement over warfarin, an anticoagulant that has been on the market for decades. Among other things, plaintiffs point out that internal bleeding associated with warfarin can be stopped via the administration of vitamin K, while there currently exists no approved reversal agent for Xarelto bleeding.

Xarelto was cleared for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration in 2011, and is now approved for the prevention of strokes in people with atrial fibrillation; the treatment of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; and the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery. A black box warning on the Xarelto label includes information about the increased risk of blood clot formation after premature discontinuation of the medication in the absence of adequate alternative anticoagulation.*

Xarelto patients who allegedly experienced uncontrollable internal bleeding or life-threatening complications related to its use may be entitled to compensation. Learn more about filing a Xarelto lawsuit by visiting Bernstein Liebhard LLP's website, or by calling 800-511-5092 to schedule a free, no obligation case review.

Those who are at risk of blood clots know that without a blood thinner medication, they could end up suffering from a stroke. A rogue blood clot could end their life without notice. To reduce that risk, they take a drug like Coumadin or Xarelto. Unfortunately, that choice could also end up costing them their life.

Coumadin has been around for over half a century. It was developed to be an anti-coagulant, and it has worked remarkably well for those who need it. The biggest issue, however, is that those on Coumadin have to keep going in for regular blood tests. The drug is hard to dose properly, and because of that the patient needs to be checked on regularly.

With a blood thinner, there is the possibility that uncontrollable bleeding may occur. The same method that prevents blood clots from causing serious harm also can cause the body to not clot when it is actually needed. The result is that cuts don’t heal properly. If those cuts are internal, such as in the gastrointestinal tract (something that is not uncommon) internal bleeding can occur and take a heavy toll on the patient.

Fortunately, for those using Coumadin, that anti-coagulant is reversible. Taking an influx of Vitamin K will reverse the effects of the drug, and allow the body to start clotting properly and thus be able to heal itself.

Xarelto does not have this reversal agent. So if a patient starts to bleed internally, the only thing that can be done is they can be monitored. Until the blood clears from the system naturally (which could be days) there is nothing that can be done.

This severe internal bleeding has led to a number of Xarelto lawsuits being filed around the country. The manufacturers and marketers of this drug never fully warned the public about the deadly side effects.

If you have used Xarelto, and you have suffered from these deadly side effects, you may be able to take part in a Xarelto MDL lawsuit. Contact Arentz Law Group P.C. today to learn more.

  4. Deadly Xarelto Bleeding Alleged in Tennessee Lawsuit

    May 18, 2015 | Bernstein Leibhard LLP

    By Staff

A Tennessee man who allegedly lost his father to Xarelto bleeding side effects has joined hundreds of other plaintiffs who have filed product liability lawsuits in a multidistrict litigation underway in Louisiana federal court. The March 20th filing seeks more than $75,000 in damages from Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson and its Janssen Pharmaceuticals subsidiary.

According to the complaint, the decedent suffered from non-valvular atrial fibrillation, and began taking Xarelto in November 2012 to reduce his risk of stroke. In March 2013, he began to experience internal bleeding, which could not be stopped. He passed away just two days later as a result of the hemorrhaging.

Like other Xarelto lawsuits pending in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana, the complaint asserts that a boxed warning on the Xarelto label did not address the risk for serious and fatal bleeding, despite the fact that during early clinical trials, the medication caused more gastrointestinal bleeds than warfarin. The lawsuit also alleges that the defendants misleadingly marketed Xarelto as being superior to warfarin. While patients taking the older blood thinner may be treated with vitamin K to stop internal bleeding, there is currently no approved remedy for Xarelto bleeding.

“Defendants merely indicated that there was a risk for bleeding,” the lawsuit states, “and side-stepped the important issue of reversing the effects of Xarelto should a bleed occur.”What is Xarelto?

Xarelto was first approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to treat patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation in November 2011. The medication’s approved indications have since been expanded to include the prevention of blood clots in patients who have undergone knee or hip replacement surgery, as well as the treatment of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. A black box warning on the Xarelto label includes, among other things, information about the increased risk of blood clot formation after premature discontinuation of the medication in the absence of adequate alternative anticoagulation.

Currently, some 434 Xarelto lawsuits are pending in the federal litigation underway in Louisiana. More than 200 similar complaints have been filed in a mass tort program established earlier this year in Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.Legal Assistance for Alleged Victims of Xarelto Bleeding

  5. Xarelto Ads and Commercials Mislead Consumers by Hiding Serious Risks

May 18, 2015 | Van Wey Law, PLLC

    By Staff

Xarelto’s website home page boasts that the drug is the "#1 Prescribed Blood Thinner in its Class!", yet it fails to point out the serious risks involved with taking the dangerous drug. If that’s not enough, the ad is accompanied by popular celebrities who endorse the drug (Kevin Nealon, Arnold Palmer, Brian Vicker). All of this is done as an attempt to make consumers feel that Xarelto is a "wonder drug".

Oviously the celebrities who endorse the drug have not suffered a serious uncontrollable bleeding event as a result of taking Xarelto. Perhaps if they, or somebody they know and love, experienced a serious internal bleeding event they would feel differently.

The truth, however, is that Xarelto is a very dangerous drug, although consumers are led to believe differently. Despite lives being lost and patients experiencing serious bleeding events, Bayer continues to market the drug as safe and effective, and Xarelto sales continue to increase.

In reality, in Louisiana alone, the number of lawsuits has increased from 33 in December of 2014 to over 400 now. This number will continue to rise, as more and more victims come forward, and as more unaware patients ingest this drug that has no antidote to stop bleeding if it should occur.

The reason victims are filing lawsuits is because of Bayer’s “failure to warn” consumers of the dangers. Bayer has a long history of placing profit above public safety, so it’s no surprise that they would try to hide the seriousness of the dangers, and the fact that doctors cannot stop or control bleeding events if they occur. Bayer is fully aware that there is no antidote for Xarelto, and they have failed to warn consumers responsibly.

Sadly, sales continue to increase as consumers believe what they see and hear on television. At this time there has been no recall of Xarelto related to internal bleeding. The investigation into the drug, however, is in its early stages, and it often takes many years, thousands of attorney hours, and millions of dollars spent before the facts come out that will lead to a recall. While we wait, lives are ruined or lost by the drug.

One of the reasons I practice personal injury law is to protect consumers, and to fight these huge corporations that will not stop at anything to make a dollar. I aim to make the public aware. I want everybody to know that what they are seeing on the commercials and ads about Xarelto is only the half truth. It is dangerous and we need to spread the word. As a consumer, you must be your own watchdog these days.

If you are taking Xarelto currently, continue taking it until you speak with your doctor about an alternative. In the meantime, be cautious of activities that could injure you or cause a bleeding event. At Van Wey Law, we believe you deserve to know the truth about dangerous drugs, and we are not afraid to stand up to these large corporations who knowingly place lives at risk to defend your rights.

  6. XARELTO LINKED TO HIGHER RISK OF GASTROINTESTINAL BLEEDING

    May 18, 2015 | Drug Justice

    By Susan Kelley

A recent study conducted on new blood thinners and their potential gastrointestinal bleeding risks found that Xarelto (clinically known as rivaroxaban) and Pradaxa (dabigatran) could be more dangerous than warfarin. The latter was once the industry standard, but has since been replaced by Xarelto and Pradaxa in hopes of finding a safer, lower maintenance drug. Recent Xarelto lawsuits indicate this may not be the case at all, however, as many people have sustained serious internal bleeding injuries while taking the anticoagulant. If you or a loved one has experienced internal bleeding after taking Xarelto which has lead to serious side effects, Act Now. You may be entitled to financial compensation. Xarelto and Pradaxa Linked to Increased Gastrointestinal Bleeding Risk This study, published in the British Medical Journal by researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, examined a group of individuals who, prior to the study, had experienced no gastrointestinal bleeding. The effects of three different drugs were considered: rivaroxaban, dabigatran and warfarin. While this particular study found that there was no statistically different risk associated with the new anticoagulants in comparison with warfarin, it did rule that while all three blood thinners raised the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, the 50 percent risk increase associated with dabigatran and the twofold higher risk associated with rivaroxaban could not be ruled out based on the findings. It’s also important to note that even though the three drugs may not have illustrated a difference between themselves, the use of anticoagulants does overall increase a person’s risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Xarelto Vs. Warfarin: Which is Safer? Xarelto, produced by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, was created in hopes that it would be safer and easier to prescribe than the previously leading anticoagulant warfarin. While the former drug has been used as a blood thinner for decades, it requires a greater degree of doctor supervision. New anticoagulants claim that they can be taken without this degree of supervision – a premise that many doctors and patients are reconsidering now, as internal bleeding injuries continue to rise. One major problem with new anticoagulants such as Xarelto is a lack of antidote. Warfarin can result in internal bleeding injuries as well, but this serious side effect can mitigated with the administration of vitamin K. Xarelto, on the other hand, has no antidote. This means that internal bleeding (such as the gastrointestinal injuries studied in April) can’t be stopped – which can be lethal. Other types of internal bleeding injuries to watch out for include: Brain hemorrhage Rectal bleeding Heavier than normal menstruation Unexplained bruising Vomiting blood Blood in the urine Deep vein thrombosis Coughing up blood According to Reuters, several doctors have speculated on the supposed benefits of Xarelto and other new blood thinners, claiming that many injuries result from an improper use of the drug overall. The lack of doctor supervision, patient knowledge and pre-prescription testing is likely a culprit of the internal bleeding injuries. The supposed benefit of Xarelto – lower maintenance administration – might be doing more harm than good after all. What You Can Do If you or someone you know has taken Xarelto and experienced internal bleeding injuries, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit. Before you get started, it’s a good idea to speak with an attorney, as he or she is familiar with mass torts of this nature. The more you know before you begin, the more likely you are to be successful moving forward. With the number of Xarelto lawsuits constantly rising, there’s never been a better time to make your claim.

  7. Xarelto Side Effects & Lawsuit Information

    May 19, 2015 | Rottenstein Law Group

    By Admin

Xarelto is a blood-thinning drug, or anticoagulant. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Xarelto in July 2011, and its sales have steadily grown since then. While bleeding is a common complication associated with anticoagulants, it has been alleged that Xarelto is more dangerous than traditional blood thinners because no antidote exists to reverse its blood-thinning side effects.Xarelto Bleeding Lawsuit

Many patients who suffered Xarelto bleeding-related injuries, strokes, pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, and heart attacks have filed a Xarelto bleeding lawsuit. Most of these Xarelto bleeding lawsuits are product liability bleed lawsuits against the manufacturers Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The manufacturers of other, similar blood-thinning drugs face similar Xarelto bleeding lawsuits. Thousands have filed Xarelto bleeding lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim. These lawsuits are quite similar and more numerous, and may provide an early glimpse of the future of Xarelto bleeding lawsuits.

While people file lawsuits for many reasons, the most prominent reason is to recover financial compensation for a patient’s injuries. Xarelto injuries can require lengthy hospitalization, significant long-term health care costs, and substantial time away from work. Product liability Xarelto bleeding lawsuits exist in large part to shift the burden of these costs to manufacturers. For many families, filing a Xarelto bleeding lawsuit can be the difference between financial hardship and making ends meet.

    Xarelto Bleeding Attorney
Patients who are injured from Xarelto side effects should consult with a Xarelto bleeding attorney to learn more about their legal options. The Rottenstein Law Group is a great Xarelto bleeding attorney who are reviewing claims of uncontrollable Xarelto bleeding side effects that might give rise to Xarelto bleeding lawsuits.

Bayer and Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. are facing several xarelto lawsuits from a leading Xarelto bleeding attorney alleging that Xarelto side effects are dangerous and defective. Plaintiffs in the Xarelto bleeding lawsuit allege serious and fatal injuries, including cerebral hemorrhaging and gastrointestinal bleeds, from use of the drug Xarelto. If you or a loved one suffered from one or more of these Xarelto side effects while taking Xarelto, and you wish to discuss your case with a Xarelto bleeding attorney.

What are the Side Effects of Xarelto?
Xarelto Side Effects Drug Center provides a comprehensive view of available drug information on the potential side effects of Xarelto when taking this medication.

Xarelto side effects include easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), bleeding from wounds or needle injections, any bleeding that will not stop. Heavy menstrual periods is a dangerous Xarelto side effect. Other Xarelto side effects include black or bloody stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Less serious Xarelto side effects may include: muscle pain, itching and pain in arms or legs. However, the most common adverse Xarelto side effects are bleeding complications, including major bleeding events. Fainting, itching, and muscle spasms have been reported. Some blood thinning antibiotics, antifungal medications, anticoagulants, blood thinners, NSAIDs, and aspirin may have adverse interactions and cause further Xarelto side effects.

  8. Xarelto Lawsuit Update: Discovery/Trial Selection

    May 19, 2015 | Lawsuit Information Center

    By Ronald V. Miller, Jr.

Over the past few years, hundreds of individuals affected by the anticoagulant Xarelto have sued Bayer/Johnson & Johnson, claiming that the drug company failed to warn individuals about the potential serious bleeding risks associated with the drug. The federal judge overseeing the litigation has ordered the parties to select various cases to go forward for additional discovery and trial as part of the “bellwether trial” selection process.Xarelto Mutidistrict Litigation Update

Starting late last year, Xarelto litigation has been consolidated before Judge Eldon Fallon of the Eastern District of Louisiana. Around 400 different Xarelto cases have been floating around the federal judicial system, so multidistrict litigation (MDL) is a tool that the parties use to avoid doing the same discovery over and over again while making sure any pretrial rulings are consistent across the board.  Basically, it is a class action lawsuit for the purposes of pre-trial discovery and then the court usually sets in some bellwether trials so both parties can see how the cases are likely to play out.

So a big part of the MDL process involves selecting a few individual cases to serve as bellwether cases. These are used as a sneak preview of sorts for the parties to see how juries will react to various aspects of trial. Earlier this month, Judge Fallon ordered the parties to meet prior to June 15 and come up with a process for selecting between 40 and 60 potential bellwether cases. Once these cases are selected, the parties will go though specific discovery to eventually determine which cases should eventually be tried. The cases selected from the “bellwether pool” will be set in for early trial dates, giving both plaintiffs and defendants the opportunity to see how things work out in the courtroom.Get a 2015 Xarelto case update here

In the May 4th order, Judge Fallon also ordered the plaintiffs to submit fact sheets, which are used by the defendants to obtain medical records along with additional information about each case. Of course the defendants have to put in some effort too, as Judge Fallon ordered them to respond to plaintiff’s fact sheets by providing information about sales representatives and any contact with physicians involved in each case.  Plus, he decided to allow the plaintiffs to bind together up to 100 complaints per filing to avoid plaintiffs having to pay 100 different filing fees (but ostensibly requiring them to find the most powerful stapler known to mankind).Xarelto Lawsuits

Being a anticoagulant, Xarelto was designed to increase blood flow in those who are at risk of blood clotting, stroke, and heart deficiency. The problem is, Xarelto does too good a job of increasing blood flow in certain individuals. Granted, every anticoagulant carries a risk of bleeding injury, but the problems with Xarelto have been consistent and troubling since the drug came on the market.

The drug’s big selling point is that it patients on Xarelto do not require blood monitoring like those on Warfarin. But studies are now coming out (rather intuitively) suggesting that monitoring those on Xarelto may make it easier to avoid complications arising from bleeding.  Perhaps the biggest issue with the drug, though, is the fact that its effects cannot be reversed should a patient have an emergency while on Xarelto. Older drugs like Warfarin have an antidote, which can be used to avoid any issues in the event of an emergency. The crux of the litigation against Bayer/Johnson & Johnson claims that the company simply failed to warn patients about all of these potential harmful effects.  That is what this is about.  No one — at least not most plaintiffs’ lawyers — are arguing for a recall.  This might be the right drug for some people in some circumstances.  But people deserve to know the risks of what they are taking.   The big thing is that with Warfarin available, people had a real option and a better option in too many cases.  They just did not know it.

Selecting the bellwether cases is just the next step here, which may or may not produce a settlement between the various plaintiffs and the drug company. Should the parties not reach a settlement, there is the potential for hundreds of individual cases to go to trial within the federal court system.Xarelto Settlements: Will They Settle and How Much?

What is the settlement value of the Xarelto bleeding claims?  Good question. The Pradexa lawsuits are seen by many plaintiffs’ lawyers as a road map to the value of the Xarelto claims.    Boehringer Ingelheim paid$650 million to settle most of those caes.  I suspect the average value of these cases will be much higher but that remains to be seen.  The picture will get a lot clearer if these bellwether cases go forward.Bringing a Lawsuit

Plaintiff’s lawsuits in these cases allege that these drug companies have willfully, wantonly and with malice withheld their superior knowledge of increased risk of irreversible bleeds in users of this drug.  Why?  They did this because they wanted to get their drug on the market and keep it on the market.

  9. Xarelto Lawsuit Update

    May 20, 2015 | Meyerkord & Meyerkord

    By Admin

Bayer Healthcare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals are now at the center of a mass lawsuit claiming the manufacturers of Xarelto failed to warn people about the potential serious side effects associated with the use of the drug. Furthermore, the federal judge overseeing the cases have now ordered both parties to select various cases to continue forward with additional discovery and trial as part of the selection process. Currently, all Xarelto lawsuits have been consolidated to be seen before Judge Eldon Fallon of the Eastern District of Louisiana. There are currently 400 cases, and the consolidation helps avoid doing the same discovery repeatedly while assuring any pretrial rulings are consistent.

Xarelto is an anticoagulant used to treat such issues as atrial fibrillation, stroke, and deep vein thrombosis. Bayer and Janssen heavily marketed Xarelto as a convenient alternative to other blood thinners because it does not require its users to have their blood monitored. Also, since there is no blood monitoring while, on Xarelto, many patients have been suffering life-threatening episodes and sadly there is no way to stop it once it has started. Unlike other blood thinners such as Coumadin, Xarelto bleeding cannot be stopped; Coumadin bleeding can be stopped by vitamin K.

The knowledgeable St. Louis personal injury attorneys at Meyerkord & Meyerkord are currently representing Xarelto cases from around the nation. If you or a loved one was injured by Xarelto use or any other drug that caused harm, please contact us today. 10. Va. Woman Sues Drug Giants for Xarelto Bleeding Injuries

    May 20, 2015 | Top Class Actions

    By Amanda Antell

Virginia plaintiff India W. is suing pharmaceutical giants Bayer Pharmaceuticals and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, for allegedly causing her to suffer near-fatal bleeding injuries. India claims that in direct result of using the defendants’ product, Xarelto, she suffered internal bleeding, and still remains under her physician’s watch.

Like millions of patients across the United States, India had been suffering from atrial fibrillation and had needed to be prescribed a blood-thinner. After reviewing the defendant’s advertisements, the plaintiff’s physician prescribed her Xarelto on April 22, 2013. According to the Xarelto lawsuit, India had followed all prescription instructions, as well as the advice of her physician.

Despite this diligence, India started suffering side effects less than a month after starting Xarelto, reporting severe fatigue and black stool to her physician on May 5, 2013. On that day, India was rushed to the emergency room and admitted to the intensive care unit where she was administered an endoscopy. This diagnostic test revealed she was suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding. Additional blood tests showed that her hemoglobin levels were very low and required a blood transfusion of one gallon.

After the transfusion, India was immediately taken off Xarelto and stayed in the hospital for several days, receiving multiple blood transfusions. During her stay, she reportedly was given a total of four units of blood. India also had to be treated with iron sulfate due to an iron deficiency anemia she developed due to her gastrointestinal intestinal bleeding event. Even though she survived her internal bleeding event, India and her physician still remain alert for any lasting side effects of Xarelto.

At no point before or after her Xarelto prescription did the defendant inform the plaintiff of the potential bleeding side effects associated with their anticoagulant, the Xarelto lawsuit alleges. There were no warnings or indications on Xarelto’s instruction label, nor did the defendant provide any kind of information on any relevant studies.

India is filing legal action against Janssen and Bayer Pharmaceuticals for failing to protect her against the drug’s side effects. The plaintiff’s lawyers state that the drug companies had the civil responsibility of warning their client and other Xarelto patients of the possible dangers their drug comes with, because they rely on the given information. India insists that she never would have taken Xarelto if she had known about the potential risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

India is suing Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bayer Pharmaceuticals for being allegedly responsible for manufacturing, selling, and marketing a dangerous drug. The charges include negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

This Xarelto Lawsuit is Case No. 2:15-cv-01492-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.Overview of Xarelto Bleeding Complications

Xarelto is the second in the line of successors for Warfarin, with many pharmaceutical experts calling them the new-generation anticoagulants. For years, Warfarin had been the only blood-thinner available for patients suffering from atrial fibrillation or patients suffering blood-clotting after undergoing knee replacement surgery.

Now, there are several other options patients can choose from to treat these conditions, including Xarelto. This drug was approved by the FDA in 2011, and was released as a joint effort between Johnson & Johnson and Bayer Pharmaceuticals, to attempt to break into the lucrative anticoagulant market.

Through aggressive sales and marketing, the investment proved to be a success as Xarelto dethroned Pradaxa, approved only a year prior, as the best-selling anticoagulant in the United States. Unfortunately, it was discovered that Xarelto had the same severe bleeding side effects as Pradaxa, and had the same design flaws as the earlier blood-thinner as well. While the new-generation anticoagulants are advertised to be more efficient and fast-acting than Warfarin, they lack two important safety features of the original blood-thinner.

Xarelto and the other new-generation blood-thinners lack an approved bleeding antidote, and do not require patients to undergo frequent dose adjustments. Experts believe that if patients had been required to frequently see their doctors, then numerous bleeding injuries could have been avoided.
