    Shunfeng International Clean Energy Ltd. plans to expand solar production capacity of its Wuxi Suntech Power Co. unit by at least 1 gigawatt, Chief Executive Eric Luo said.

    Shunfeng is looking at locations in North America and Southeast Asia to either build a new factory or buy an existing one, Luo said Monday in an interview. The facility will be able to produce “over 1 gigawatt” of cells and panels annually, he said.

    Rising labor, land and energy costs in China and the reduced need for personnel to operate the most advanced automated production lines is making it more economical to produce solar components in other countries, he said.

    “We want to be close to our customers,” Luo said by phone. “Chinese companies are encouraged to grow abroad and invest abroad.” He didn’t say when a new factory would be ready to go into production.

    Wuxi Suntech’s former parent company, Suntech Power Holdings Co., was once the world’s biggest solar company; slumping prices left it unable to pay it debts and it was pulled into bankruptcy in China in 2013. Shunfeng purchased the Wuxi, China-based manufacturing unit in 2014.

    The industry is benefiting from strong demand in China, Japan and the U.S., where solar power capacity has jumped 20-fold since 2008 as companies including Apple Inc. use it to reduce their carbon footprint.

    Shunfeng is “very optimistic” on its prospects in the U.S., where it seeks to sell to bigger corporate customers including shopping malls and sports arenas as well as homeowners, Luo said. The company sees a “huge spike” in demand for solar in China in the next few months.

    Shunfeng International Clean Energy (SFCE) is looking to expand Wuxi Suntech’s annual PV cell and module production capacity by at least 1GW, according to a recent report.

    Bloomberg quotes SFCE chief executive Eric Luo as saying that the group will either set up a new plant or purchase one, likely in North America or Southeast Asia.

    Luo also said that the group — which posted a 1.3bn yuan ($209.5m) net profit in 2014, from a 1.8bn yuan loss a year earlier, largely on the strength of solid sales of Wuxi Suntech’s PV modules — is upbeat about future opportunities in the US market, and expects PV demand to surge in China later this year.

    The company's shipments of wafers, cells and modules last year were 1.5GW.

    Shunfeng could not be immediately reached for additional comment when contacted byRecharge.

    SFCE acquired Wuxi Suntech — the former production unit of fallen PV giant Suntech Power — in early 2014 for $483m.

    Since then, it has aggressively diversified across the solar value chain, and has even moved into the wind business in recent months

     China-based Shunfeng International Clean Energy Ltd (HKG:1165) is evaluating locations in North America and Southeast Asia for a solar cell and module production plant of over 1 GW for its unit Wuxi Suntech, Bloomberg said Monday.  

    The parent may either build a new facility or buy an existing one, CEO Eric Luo was quoted as saying in a telephone interview.

    The Chinese government's “going out” policy, coupled with growing labour, land and energy costs in the country are among the main reasons to turn the solar products maker’s attention towards new destinations.

    Wuxi Suntech was the main unit in China of Suntech Power Holdings before it was acquired by Shunfeng. Yesterday, the subsidiary unveiled its new SuperPoly product line of upgraded polycrystalline modules. At present, the firm’s manufacturing capacity for the product amounts to 100 MW, but is expected to top 1 GW by end-2015.

    China-based PV manufacturer Wuxi Suntech is migrating 1GW of cell production to PERC in 2015 as it launches its ‘SuperPoly’ module series at Intersolar Europe. 

    According to Suntech its new SuperPoly module will be available globally in July, 2015 from a manufacturing capacity of 100MW. However, plans are underway to ramp capacity to 1GW in 2015. 

    "We're very excited to be introducing the SuperPoly module at Intersolar Europe this week, along with our new products such as the HyPro module, which is our latest high efficiency module that we offer with PERC solar cell technology," said Xiong Haibo, president of Suntech. "Our continual investment in research and development in our PV technology is part of Suntech's vision of a cost efficient and energy efficient future. The SuperPoly is another module in our range of products that has passed the VDE's certification standards. Our customers who are looking to build utility size projects will find that the SuperPoly panel is the perfect fit for their energy needs."

    According to preliminary data from PV Tech’s annual R&D spending report for 2014, Suntech increased annual R&D spending from US$2.2 million in 2013 to US$11.7 million in 2014. 

    The key reason for the increase was the acquisition of Wuxi Suntech from bankruptcy by Shunfeng in 2014. However, putting the R&D spending in perspective, Canadian Solar a top 5 global solar company spent US$12.05 million last year, up from US$11.6 million in 2013. 

    The multicrystalline P-type SuperPoly module is said to also integrate an in-depth reflection technology and passivation process, which enables the module to generate at least 2 power classes more (approximately 10W) than the average industry level module, reaching efficiency levels up to 16.7%. 

    The company also noted that it had made improvements to the cell colour uniformity to allow the SuperPoly 72 cell module to produce an optimal 325W at peak performance. 

    Additionally, the PID-free module sustains higher power output at 200W/m2 compared to the conventional module in weak lighting conditions, catering to markets that require high efficiency and durability under dynamic solar conditions such as the UK, Germany and Thailand. 

    The SuperPoly, like all Suntech's four busbar module designs, has a lower probability of micro-cracks and hotspots, making the modules less susceptible to malfunctions that lead to significant power degradation, according to the company.

    Chinese manufacturer Suntech has announced its intention to upgrade 1 GW of its module capacity to polycrystalline PERC output by the end of 2015. The resultant 72-cell modules will have a power output of 325 W, an increase of around 10 MW from its non-PERC, four busbar modules.

    Lazarus-like producer Suntech has announced the upgrade of a portion of its module output, targeted at the utility scale market. Employing PERC technology, in four busbar modules, the new Suntech SuperPoly modules will be unveiled for the first time this week at the Intersolar trade show.

    Suntech has indicated that it will initially roll out the multicrystalline PERC technology in 100 MW of its production, increasing that to 1 GW by the end of the year.

    "We're very excited to be introducing the SuperPoly module at Intersolar Europe this week, along with our new products such as the HyPro module, which is our latest high efficiency module that we offer with PERC solar cell technology," said Xiong Haibo, president of Suntech, in a statement. “Our customers who are looking to build utility size projects will find that the SuperPoly panel is the perfect fit for their energy needs."

    The rearside passivation cell technology (PERC) Suntech will employ will additionally employ “in-depth reflection technology”, resulting in a 10 W power boost to its standard polycrystalline cells. The move is on top of the rollout of its application of four-busbar cell interconnection technology that it announced last month, on the module level.

    Together the innovations will result in a polycrystalline module with 16.7% module efficiency.

    At the Intersolar Europe trade show, Suntech will also present its high efficency HyPro module utilizing PERC technology, which achieves 20.5% cell efficiency on monocrystalline wafers. The HyPro panels are an AC module, presumably employing microinverters. Additionally the company will present a module treated with anti-glare glass coating, for applications adjacent to airports. The anti-glare coating results in a three percent reduction in reflection.Related News:
